What was your experience with Zithromax/azithromycin for Bartonella?

What was your experience with Zithromax/azithromycin for Bartonella? I have been on azithromycin and tinidazole for past 6 weeks for bartonella. Before that i was on Rifampin and Azithromycin for about 4 months (Dec through April). And about 2 years ago I was on azithromycin for 3-4 months before stopping antibiotics and switching to herbals.

I've realized that every time I'm on azithromycin it does i guess hit the bartonella, but it never really improves the symptoms. At best I get an up and down feel throughout the day (feel bad in morning feel better at night or vice versa). Obviously it seems like my llmd holds azithromycin in very high regards seeing as he keeps putting me on it. But it never seems to wholly improve symptoms. Maybe it improves them slightly? But then what's the point of keep going back on this antibiotic if I go through hellish herxes with only minimal improvement?? I've actually backslided from since I've been on it. My last period about 2 weeks ago was the worse it's been in months and I had a huge increase in Bart symptoms.

So has anyone used azithromycin/Zithromax for bartonella? What was experience with it?

Zith just pairs well with other ABX across Bb/Bart/Babs protocols. In Bart protocol, Zith help to prevent resistance to Rifampin. I think I was on Zith from March 2011 thru March 2013 paired with every ABX combo you can imagine, with herbs in parallel

I too have been fighting bart for a long time with different Rif combos.

Rif, mino and plaquenil was one of my most successful. Leviquin hit my Achilles tendon after 19 days.

Cipro, mino and plaq was also pretty effective.

CSA never did much for me. Just had some improvements switching Hout to fresh leaf from Woodland Ess. I'm pretty good right now around 85 to 90% again. I have also hit virals pretty hard for the past 10 months. See my LLMD next week to see what's next, or stay the course.

Hi. I've only used Azithromycin for Bartonella when it has been paired with Rifampin. Without Rifampin (or even Bactrim), I don't believe Azithromycin is enough to combat Batonella.

I know others, who might chime in, have used Zith with Rif for Bart with success. I only took the combo for a month before my Babesia symptoms emerged and became overwhelming. So, we decided to treat that first.

I'm on Zith, Mepron and Ceftin currently, and considering adding Buhner's herbal protocol -- at least Sida Acuta and Houtt -- for Bartonella as I cannot take Rifampin with Mepron.

While Rifampin (second to Levaquin, which I personally am afraid to use) is the drug of choice, I know that some LLMDs also consider using Biaxin with Bactrim for Bartonella.

I doubt Zithromax with Tinidazole will knock out Bart.

You need Rifampin or rifabutin.

You said Zithro just pairs well with others? Yes, that's what it seems like most people say online. It doesn't seem like Zithro itself is useful in getting rid of bartonella. It seems like its just there.

To KB689 and Girlie,

I was already on Rifampin and Zithromax. My llmd has repeatedly said he doesn't believe rifampin is a very good drug, but seems to hold zithro in a high regard. When I was zithromax and rifampin all of my symptoms got worse with little improvement for months. Every month was just a new symptom added.

Any other drug combinations to suggest for bartonella because I see my doctor tomorrow and judging by the refills on my zithromax bottle I think he's gonna keep me on it for another 6 weeks. IDK about the tindazole.

Rifampin is the go-to drug for Bartonella...so I'm a bit concerned that your LLMD doesn't think it's a good drug.

There are the fluoroquinolones that are known to be more effective...but with the black box warning - I wouldn't take it (unless it was a last resort...but I would try everything first)

How long were you on Rifampin? A few months won't do it. i know people who have taken it for a long time before it has resolved their symptoms (like a year or longer)

Rifabutin - you could try - if the Rifampin didn't work. Same class...but not identical.

I was on rifampon for about 6 months. Girlie, did Rifampin work for you? What worked for you to get rid of your bartonella?

I don't know if my bart is gone...my second pcr test didn't see it after a year of bart treatment.

But, I still have symptoms...so have decided to treat Babesia - to see if that is holding me back.

Since starting babs treatment, my foot pain has gotten bad again...and I've experienced some rib pain, too.

So, not sure what's happening.

When i transitioned over from bart to babs - i had less than 10 symptoms left (started with close to 40) - but I think I have about 11 or 12 now.... cry

I am likely going to go back to bart treatment after a good run at Babesia.

totally agree...rifampin was effective but liver and adrenals didnt like it much did with zith iv ...hh2 and allicin with bvt and propolis is putting a hurt on bart without killing me ...i think zith may get threw one cell wall but not the other ..and roceph just seems to put it on pause ..
