Hi Patty -
I'm so sorry - I know EXACTLY what you're experiencing. Many of us do.
You're absolutely right to question adrenal function and yes, please get the saliva test done - it might help you understand how to support it. Other times, you might need to try a few different things out. Hope your solution comes fairly easily.
The sx you described are "neurological-psychological" symptoms that are very common w/ Lyme & Co and the treatment that comes along with it. Also, those are common sx where GI issues are concerned (keep in mind the gut-brain connection that science proved when they found blood vessels that connect the two). The imbalance triggers neurotransmitter imbalances, which cause sx like anxiety, rage, feeling crazy, you name it. For me - these are my worst sx.
Adrenal imbalances can also cause neurotransmitter imbalances. Adrenal function is part of the HPA axis or the hypothalmus-pituitary (triggers thyroid function) and adrenal functions and interacts in lock-step with GI and immune function (70% of our immune function is in our GI). So they all need to be coordinating together to keep things working correctly.
Gut dysbiosis can lead to sx in the brain due to bacteria imbalance, yeast/fungal overgrowth that can occur when we target bacteria w/ abx or other antimicrobials, or food poisoning or infections in the GI. Neurotoxins can develop in the GI and travel to the brain.
You can have gut issues from many other things - not just abx.
When I initially started treatment, my LLMD put me on Byron White herbal tinctures including A-Bart. I started developing these strange GI attacks and overwhelming neuro-psycho sx. The attacks got so bad we switched to IV vanco and for the first month on the vanco, my herxing was horrific - I would cycle through every extreme emotion you can imagine, hour after hour - "CRAZY" is how it felt. Out of control, just as you said. It was very dangerous, too, because I couldn't control it. Week by week those sx and all the others started to improve and I'd say by the 6th week the vanco was working great and I had significant improvement in my bart sx.
Since I had these same GI attacks w/ the A-bart AND the same herxing with the A-bart as I had w/ the vanco - my theory is that I had significant bart or bart-like (mine was actually diagnosed as "bartlike organism or BLO) in my GI and that's what caused so much horrible herxing.
Byron White herbs are considered to be 10x more potent than other protocols so something else you can try is the bart line of Beyond Balance protocols - I love them. I take a few.
The other thing I STRONGLY suggest is increasing your focus on your gut health - reduce your diet to ONLY whole, healthy foods (no sugar at all, no simple carbs ---the white stuff---white rice/flours/potato, no dairy and no grains). Not forever, just to get past the initial herxing. The short version of why you want to do this is to clarify and simply what your body has to process - fewer chemicals and reactive foods will help reduce those sx.
Also, try taking a binder - there hae been a few other discussions about binders today/yesterday so give those a good read - lots to search as well. The binders will help move the toxins through your GI more quickly so that they don't contribute to the neurotoxins that cause the neuro-psycho sx. I ran out of my binder and then forgot to resume taking it... 3 wks go by and I could feel the neuro-psycho sx return with a vengeance. 2 days of binders and I'm feeling normal again.
Also - please try using brain detox tinctures made by Nutramedix - Pinella and Burbur ---many of us are using them successfully.
Hope that's helpful - hang in there - it's temporary.
