Is band 23 lyme specific or not? Did I get this from hubby?

Hi guys,
I've only posted on here one time before. My husband was in a horrible way and we knew he had lyme and needed to find a doctor. A lot of you replied back and we found a llmd near us and she's been great. He's feeling so much better, although not back to normal yet. It's only been a like 4 months though so we're hopeful. Anyway, my issue is this. A couple of weeks ago I started to have some weird things going on with my lower legs. Twitching and pulsating type feelings and then my knees started bothering me. Nothing crazy, but I've never had knee pain before this. Then my heart started to have palpitations at night. I knew something was up and suspected lyme. Before my husband had lyme I probably would have just brushed all these symptoms off but now I know better. So I made an appointment at my family doctor to have an annual physical done with labs and requested a western blot. I know the western blots suck, but I just wanted to see what I was dealing with here. I got my results today and I was reactive on only band 23 IgG and IgM. I've read conflicting things about band 23 being lyme specific or not. My husband had band 23 IgM as reactive as well. He also had two other bands though that I don't have and his symptoms have been different than mine. I'm starting to think I may have had lyme in the past and I've been reinfected from him. I was bitten by a tick about 20 years ago and received no treatment for it. I've been taking a multivitamin, CoQ10, vit d, vit c, milk thistle, b12, probiotics, and Monolaurin since my symptoms started kicking in and I've already seen a remarked decrease in my symptoms. I really don't want to start on any antibiotics. I tend to not handle them well. I guess I should make an appointment with our llmd. Sorry, I know I'm just rambling now. I'm just really angry now about the whole situation. We went through he'll getting my husband to where he is now and I don't want to get to the point he was at. Any thoughts?

Hi Mimi410,

I'm so glad to hear your husband is moving forward in his treatment and that you were able to locate a good llmd.

Your symptoms certainly could be Lyme, especially since you said you were bitten before.
This is what we have posted on our new to lyme page about band 23:

23-25 outer surface protein C (OspC), specific for Bb(Lyme)


Lyme also can be sexually transmitted.

Since you don't do well with ABX, you might want to consider the herbal treatments.

Many people have success with them.

There is the Stephen Buhner protocols, Cowden, Dr William Rawls, Green dragon botanical s in Vermont has a Buhner formula in capsule form, Beyond Balance and I believe Jerrnigans.

It would still be wise to see your husbands llmd to make sure about co infections so you treat properly.
They should be able to clinically diagnosis you also.

As goshawk stated band 23 is lyme specific.


If you're not wanting the abx...why not do herbals. goshawk has listed some popular herbal protocols.

"We need to teach doctors how to make a clinical diagnosis of Lyme disease after ruling out other diseases, supporting that diagnosis by finding borrelia-specific bands on the Western Blot, which show evidence of exposure. This would include finding the 23(OspC), 31(OspA), 34(OspB), 39, and 83-93 kDa bands on the Western Blot. "

Thanks guys. I figured it was lyme specific. I made an appointment with the llmd for next week. Hopefully since my symptoms are so minor right now it won't progress to anything more serious.

There is always a doctor who will say band 23 could be this or that. Based my symptoms and the fact treatment has made a difference in the past, I definitely believe 23 is Lyme specific., Good idea to go ahead and treat.

The fact that you state you have any symptoms at all is reason enough to treat.
