Easy way to start Buhner?

Does anyone have an easy way to start Buhners protocal? I am extremely confused. I had planned on making my own tinctures of each individual herb because I dont know how to make them all combined and get the right dosage, but then something about andrographis is best in capsule form and then someone told me that they take some powders straight in water. Can anyone who is doing just buhner tell me what they do? I understand herbs are different for everyone, and I already know which herbs I am going to start with (I have been taking some already with antibiotics, but am going to stop antibiotics next month). You can choose what method you want - I took capsules for awhile...but it was so many per day - just CC and JK was something like 25-30 caps daily. Then add in my other supplements.

So, now when I take any of Buhner's herbs, I do tinctures. Put several in 1/4 glass of water and down the hatch all at once.

I buy from one of Buhner's recommended sources: Woodland Essence.

Yes, I believe Japanese Knotweed (for 1) is a blood thinner..but not sure how much of one.


You could do a new thread - list the herbs you're thinking of ordering and ask the members which ones are blood thinners.

The other option is to book an appt. with one of Buhner's recommended herbalists. They do phone appointments.
Herbalists, while not Doctors do know about the interactions between specific herbs and medications.

I doubt if most Doctors would know this.

Thanks. Doing full dose of the tincture only lasts a couple days (I read that somewhere on here) which is why i was thinking of making my own. I wasn't planning on taking capsules for that reason.

It would be more than a couple of days for most people.

Many people do dosages of 1 dropperful 3 X daily.
The larger bottle of tincture would last more than a few days...I can't remember how long mine lasted - I think at least 4 weeks and I didn't buy the largest bottle...I bought the 2 oz ones.

Chapter 8 of Buhner's Healing Lyme, 2nd Edition

1. Protecting endothelial structures (pg 214) - Polygonum cuspidatum (Hu Zhang or Japanese Knotweed)

2. Cytokine remodulation (pg 214) - Salvia miltiorrhiza (Red Sage or pinyin: dānshēn) and Scutellaria baicalensis (Skullcap or Huang Qin)

3. Collagen protection (pg 214) - Great lakes gelatin, Vit C, Selenium, etc - My personal recommendation for collagen is Protein Essentials Hydrolyzed Collagen.

4. Immune remodulation (pg 215) - Unicaria tomentosa (Cat's Claw), Cordyceps mycelium (a mushroom), withania somnifera (ashwagandha), Eleutherococcus senticosus, Glycyrrhiza (licorice)

5. Antispirochetal (pg 215) - Andrographis

Cindy, what I did was each herb in the order Buhner listed them in. I did one herb at a time down the list. I started with a very low dose, most the time I started with 1 drop, 2 times a day. And then I slowly moved up.

When I started an herb and it gave me trouble, I skipped it and moved on. I did not need ashwagandha and I did not want licorice, so I skipped those. Sida Acuta made my heart race and Eleutherococcus made my heart have butterflies.

I first took my most horrible symptom, which is what Buhner suggests, and I dealt with that. For me, that was my heart problems. I did Hawthorn and Motherwort to start.

Find your worst symptom and start with it first. That is what Buhner suggests. Then go to the Core Protocol that I posted.

Feel free to write me and ask any questions. I have healed. I treated my husband, but he quit the herbs too soon and now he is treating again.

What is one dropperful- that is about 30 drops right? Which is 1/4 tsp or 1 tsp? (i cant remember) I just looked and there is 6 teaspoons in an ounce.

My stomach is hurting from antibiox again, so I'm looking to ramp up on herbs. Thanks for all the info!

Peteza - thank you. It seems like my body will tolerate it for about 6 weeks, even with pulsing and not taking them every day. I'm going to take 2-4 week break and then talk to LLMD again.

I went to the library yesterday and got Buhner's book about herbs. I feel like my main symptoms now are from Bart, so I want to focus on those.

Do you recommend buying the premade tinctures or buying herbs and making tinctures yourself? And where do you recommend buying herbs/tinctures from? I have woodlandessance website up, I am also looking at elkmountainherbs and rosemountainherbs. thanks

Thanks for your input. I don't have the book anymore. I took it out from the library. I took pics of the pages with his protocols. Also some of the suppliers. Do you happen to know any of the herbalists that he recommends and there phone #'s?
