I agree - I think the steroids could have been a whammy - they affected me the same way, caused a gigantic crash.
Don't let your adrenals fool you. Their function is to keep you going - through thick-and-thin. So they'll keep your head above water while your stress level is high. And then once you get past your crisis ---or crises, then they are SUPPOSED to shift into a more normal non-stressed state so they don't get depleted.
This is why a sustained level of stress can cause adrenal imbalance, then adrenal fatigue, then adrenal exhaustion. There are various stages and the final stage is death--kind of like a car engine running out of oil. There is a ton of good info online about adrenal support and recovery - and we've had some good discussions here on the forum, too, if you'd like to search for them.
Most of the time, adrenal recovery requires time spent in a low gear, recovering your sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the "fight or flight" response and transitioning into a focus on your parasympathetic nervous system, which controls homeostasis and the body at "rest and digest" function. Many people do very well with simple supplementation. But not always - I certainly didn't and the only way I was able to recover was literally to shut down all activity, work, and interaction with people in order to control psychological stress.
Physical and physiological stress is caused by Lyme & Co and everything else it causes, as well as the treatment and that is much harder to control. Sometimes, this means you have to slow treatment down as well and make incremental advancements so that there is less stress on your body and you allow yourself to recover from one stage of tx at a time before moving to the next level of tx, the next dose increase, before adding the next component, etc.
I slowed my activity down, stopped exercising, and broke down my protocol into much more manageable bites that took much longer to move through. Two years later, my adrenals are in really good shape and of course I'm recovering from herxing and flares much better now.
And I also agree - if you were symptom-free or feeling really great, chances are you will be able to feel that way again some day!
