Complete Loss of Smell

I've completely lost the ability to smell anything. I was on Mepron, Zithro, Omnicef, BEG Nasal spray. My LLMD and 2 ENT's didn't think any of those could cause it so they're ordering an MRI with contrast.

They also said there's a limited amount of time to get your sense of smell back before you most likely lose it forever. So they all agreed to stop all treatments, take prednisone for 15 days (even the LLMD said we should do it) to try to get it back.

I haven't found much in the boards or online. If anyone has any helpful suggestions for cause or treatment I would greatly appreciate it.

I don't have any experience with this, and haven't seen anyone posting about it here, either.

Hopefully someone will chime in.

I'm sorry you're going through this - and I bet the prednisone will help. I'm glad you're doing an MRI - you could have something pressing on the part of your brain that controls smell - this could be simple inflammation, too.

I lose my sense of smell and taste whenever I have a sinus infection, which is usually a fungal issue or a biofilm issue. Do you have any yeast/fungal sx? I have mycoplasma pneumonia right now, which is causing sinus issues but this time it's affected my hearing as well. Crazy.

Please let us know how things go and what you find out -

Jaden, I am surprised that your LLMD suggested a steroid. Usually steroids make our lyme even worse. I hope this is not the case with you.

I have not loss my sense of smell. In fact I had olfactory hallucinations when I first was diagnosed with lyme. I smelled smoke a lot and that was so scary because I live in the forest. Then I went through a phase where I smelled dirt.

PeteZa the only smell i sometimes get is like a burning smell, sounds similar to you. Did this eventually go away for you?

I consulted 2 LLMD's and both said I should do the steroid, even though it weakens your immune, since losing smell is permanent. Sometimes you have to deal with the fallout which takes you off course for a short while.

With treatment my smell issues resolved. It was scary. I could not trust my sense of smell for months. And, sometimes it was like an electrical fire smell. It was so hard to describe to people and it made no sense.

Lyme has so many strange and unusual symptoms. Who would ever think that a dinky tick could cause so many strange and outlandish symptoms?

I never in my wildest dreams would have imagined ......

Oh and about the steroids, doctors are probably a heck a lot smarter than me. LOL!!

With most prednisone scripts - upon taking your first dose the doctor is contemplating weaning you off of it. That is what they did with me years ago when I got hives all over my torso. I took a dose and then the next dose was less and less. I still was taking it for 2 weeks, but it is a drug you are suppose to wean off, not stop cold turkey.

Weird!! Somewhere along the way my sense of smell was lost too! I am not sure if lyme related. I am a former smoker, but quit like 5 years ago. My sense of smell faded away 2 years ago.

I always worry if I stink/ have bad breath/ or my house stinks and i cant smell it.

In your situation, I would eat more or supplement with zinc. Your symptoms can happen from acute zinc loss.

I have a friend who lost his sense of smell and then he about 5 years later he got "Alzheimers" - I personally believe he has some sort of Lyme like infection and that those two "symptoms" are related. Haven't researched it though and have no evidence. Just a hunch.

I see you listed Buhner Protocol in your signature line. I did read where someone lost the sense of taste. Maybe one of the herbs causes loss of smell in some??? Buhner suspected knotweed or andrographis.
