I saw a doctor who followed Shoemaker's protocol (for the most part). I had the one of the multi-susceptible genes and the borrelia gene and long term mold exposure. I was given Cholestyramine and told to start at about
1/4 of a dose and slowly work up. I had already been on liposomal glutathione and fish oil for a month before starting Cholestyramine. My symptoms got horribly worse and finally the doctor told me to stop. I took it for about
11 days. Took another week and a half to two weeks for the cytokines storm to die down.
After that, I pressed for more Lyme testing (thank God). The doctor kept saying "maybe it's MARCONS," even though I'd already tested negative for MARCONS. I asked pointed questions about
the reliability of test results for both MARCONS and the Lyme Western blot. At that point, the doctor told me about
the poor testing for Lyme and I learned there were better tests for Lyme. I tested through Igenex and was negative, then through DNA Connexions and was positive for borrelia and ehrlichia.
Then the doctor gave me minocycline to try to treat the Lyme and ehrlichia. I was supposed to take it for 30 days. After 7 days, the doctor told me to stop as my symptoms were getting worse again. I stopped but instead of recovering in a week or so, I got much worse to the point of barely being able to walk for two months. The doctor didn't know what to do with me. Finally, a couple months later, I decided to start treating Lyme and coinfecions on my own with Buhner's protocols.
I know there are others who swear by the Cholestyramine and I'm sure there are many who have gotten their lives back following Shoemakers protocol. I do not believe Shoemaker's protocol is the only way to treat mold or biotoxin illness. I do believe his science is sound. For those who respond well to it, it is probably the fastest and most feasible way to recover. For those like me, who do not respond well, I do not believe it is a death sentence if you don't follow his protocol. Most likely those who don't respond well have other uncovered issues related to detoxification and/or undiagnosed/untreated infections that are causing undue distress and difficulties. Unfortunately, Shoemaker only acknowledges MARCONS and Lyme (borrelia only) in that respect and thereby misses a subset of the sick population IMO.
Post note: Regardless of what you do to treat biotoxins, you MUST remove yourself from mold AND mycotoxin exposure, including contaminated belongings. As long as you're exposed to mold and/or mycotoxins on personal belongings, you will remain symptomatic.
