Have Lyme and cos by developed mild marlar rash with continued fat loss

I tested positive for Lyme Disease, babesia and mycoplasma pnemonioe and have had loss of body fat going on for years now.Recently, as posted before, the loss accelerated.

I have always said I get redissh "circles," then fat loss follows. Have always thought lupus was involved and now have light Marlar rash forming on my face. Also skin feels burning on face/ears. When I get in the sun, things get worse.

Though LUPUS tests (ANA, anti-DNA, etc..) have been very low or negative, I have read cutaneous lupus will not always show up as positive on tests. I have very little joint pain. My issues have been, primarily, fat loss and fatigue.

Have not read where Lyme Disease or co-infections can cause Marlar (butterfly) rash across face. Also to note is things have gotten worse since starting babesia treatment with antimalarial herb mix called Crypto-Plus at low dose.

Anyone experience anything similar. Totally at a loss.

Hi running wild -

I'm not sure what to think. I'm sure you've explored various treatments. My only suggestion is to evaluate yeast/fungal overgrowth and gut health- several imbalances and bacteria overgrowth can cause weird responses in the skin like you describe. Gut health AND infections and pathogens in the GI are commonly overlooked so that's why I throw it out there.

Others will be along for more input.

Lyme and co's can cause autoimmune reactions - that can be misdiagnosed for Lupus, Sjogrens etc.

Many people have a positive ANA when they have lyme.


What does your LLMD say? Have you done extensive treatment of all three B's?

Waiting to see LLND. Treating all three (lyme, babesia and mycoplasma p.) now. Fat loss has been taking place long time, but the darkening circles across face is new.

I tested negative for Lyme a year ago and all the other automimmune disease tests. For the past year I have been suffering from strange symptoms one of the being fat/tissue loss. My eyes have gone dry (diagnosed with pinguecula and inflamed eyelids) my gum tissue receding and getting thin in my whole mouth, not just one tooth. Plus over last six months noticing a thinning everywhere on my body, face down to my feet.

I have been in and out of doctor offices and dentists with no help or explanation.

The most concerning for me is my mouth. I have always practiced good hygiene and had great teeth up until a year ago when I literally could watch my gums thinning. Now my teeth are shifting as well and my jaws starting to be affected.

I don't know what to make of it and it is distressing. I am thinking of rechecking Lyme and having the western blot test done.

Hi HaleyBugs - welcome!

What lab did you have the testing done at? It wasn't a Western Blot?

If not Igenex, I suggest you try that - just the WB IgM and IgG for total of $210.


Interesting you mentioned the gum thinning - are they receding...more tooth exposed?

Re: your jaw - do you see bone loss on the X-rays?

I had periodontal issues prior to lyme....but am wondering if I had this lyme infection longer than I realize.
But, my gum issues have been in remission for many years now. No more bleeding gums..or noticeable bone loss.
I did do the dental hygiene appts 3 months apart.

Haley Bug - is it fat and collagen but not muscle? My muscle does not seem affected.

I had a Lyme IGG/M AB screen which came back negative. I went through my primary physician so not sure of the lab. Did not have western blot. I will look into Igenex.

My doctor looked at everything from thyroid, rheumotoid factor, C-reactive, smooth muscle and all negative.

My symptoms really started in my mouth last year and have since just keep adding more symptoms and none of the doctors have any answers.

My gum tissue and the area below the gum line have all thinned. Started on the bottom and now on the top. I have been to dentists and periodontist. Teeth are all healthy it is the weak gums and my teeth on the bottom have shifted since last year.

Then noticing a general thinning of my skin all over. Not muscle loss seems like fat/collagen. I don't have joint pain, but my joints are creaking almost all the time (knees/legs/back/neck) which I never had.

I am only 47 so yes age, but I feel that I have aged 20 years in the past year.

I experienced something similar.

My symptoms began in Oct 2009. As time went on, I gradually improved but symptoms continued to come and go. One of the symptoms that remained constant was heat, redness, and inflammation in my face. It was not the butterfly rash of lupus. I did not have positive ANA or other autoimmune markers. The sides of my face and lower jaw was where my face was affected. It was embarrassing, as it looked like a sunburn. It felt like a sunburn, too. I wore sunblock daily during the time mine was the worst, and it made no difference. I realized that sun exposure was not causing the problem for me. Something else was causing it. I even went to Mayo Clinic during the time it was the worst and they had no clue what it was and never mentioned Lyme disease.

That redness, burning, and inflammation was there from 2009 until the fall of 2015 after I got a second wave of symptoms. That time, I was suffering from severe silent reflux symptoms, sudden onset of IBS-C, and had started going through menopause. I started Nexium and Zantac for the reflux symptoms. Much to my surprise, the mucus I had for so long went away AND the heat, redness, and inflammation in my face went away. I took that medicine for about 6 months and then stopped. I have not had a recurrence of severe mucus or the redness, heat, and inflammation in my face since then. I did not start treating Lyme until June 2017. I don't know why that stopped, but my face looks and feels normal now. I'm thankful for that and clueless about how/why it started and then stopped. Hope yours goes away, too.

You mentioned ears. I also had recurring episodes in the years following the onset of my symptoms when I would get red, burning earlobes. I know it happened in my left earlobe. I can't remember if it happened in both earlobes or not. Since starting Buhner's bartonella protocol, I've had sharp pains in the outer part of my left ear that come and go. I also had my left ear close up for 2 weeks in 2015. I suspect bartonella is in my left ear. I could be wrong. It could be Lyme or babesia. Who knows???

Walking by Faith - What you mention is interesting in a couple of ways. One is your problems seem to be related to gut issues. I feel worse when stomach does.

Second your comments about the Mayo Clinic hit home. While that organization does some incredibly great things, you go there with something like Lyme Disease or loss of fat, and it is a complete waste of time and money.

When I went a few years ago, when I mentioned Lyme Disease, you would have thought I said I was from another planet. And while one of the doctors did mention my fat loss and referred to it as lipodstrophy, he did nothing nor suggested nothing. He only brought in a few students to look at me like I was in a zoo.

Finally, the nutritionist simply told me to "eat more." DUH. She suggested all kinds of food that are not part of Lyme diet. I received a $300 bill for her time because she was out of network.

So doctors have acknowledged the fat loss problem a number of times but did not test to find out anything. Easier to ignore.

I think at least part of the burning skin I have on my face and ears is from recently starting an anti-malarial herb for babesia. But that still does not explain fat loss or burning ears for a long time. I have been concerned about lupus as dark circles form and then connect on my face and other parts of body, followed by loss of fat. The rheumy I see said she is sure from testing I do not have any form of lupus, but my blood sugars are going up.

Hi Running Wild,

I just wanted to touch base and see if you had any luck with the fat/collagen loss you have described.

I am having it bad and it just keeps on going all over my body. I can't find anyone else having with such severity. I am getting super scared.
