Antibiotic treatments (IV preferred) around Alberta

Hi everyone,

I had declined quite severely last year and finally got treatment - I did 4 weeks of IV antibiotics. Which seemed miraculously helpful until recently I started seeing some symptoms recurring. When I did some research it seems that abx must be done long-term - at least 2 months after the last symptom.

Is anyone able to point me to doctors prescribing antibiotics around Alberta? Will travel to the US as well if necessary. IV is preferred because clearly my body responded very well to it.

Unfortunately 4 weeks of treatment is not long enough for chronic Lyme. You are looking at months to a few years of treatment.

Can you go back to the Dr who prescribed the IV abx?

The LLND in Richmond may do IV abx and then follow up with orals.

There are LLMD’s who do prescribe IV abx but they don’t recommend it for all their patients.

There’s a LLMD in Seattle - you could call and see if they prescribe IV abx.

During my appt at the “J” clinic- I asked about how IV abx would work for someone long distance.
They said that they train someone - a spouse or friend how to administer them.
They’ve also had people just travel to the clinic and stay in DC for several months and get them done at the clinic. But that’s not practical or affordable for most people.

No of course not. There is no Lyme in Alberta per the medical community here - did you not know?


I traveled for my treatment - we had corresponded at one point. I just sent you an email.

I've contacted a few people in BC and Seattle. Good to know about Dr J because I don't think I can afford months in DC.

I agree with you that the four weeks is likely not enough. With my symptoms slowly reappearing it's obvious I'm relapsing. Hence this desperate bid for information.

No of course not. There is no Lyme in Alberta per the medical community here - did you not know?

I was wondering how you'd managed that.

Well, there is a LLMD (infectious disease Dr.) we a very long wait list and thought by chance you may have gotten in to see him.
Or...maybe you were able to convince your own MD...wasn't sure.

After reading your email...I do remember you traveled for the IV abx.

His wait list is so long and I heard he's not taking new patients anymore. I tried to persuade my GP to talk to him at least to get advice and he did try. But ended up not following up with his receptionist as he was on vacation at the time - all the while every day I was suffering immensely. So I just took matters into my own hands and flew out.

I'm alone without any family out here so I had to take some action while I could still get up and about.

I did meet two patients of this Dr though who had advised one of them that IV abx was her best bet but that he was not allowed to give it to her even though he believed it was the best course of treatment unless she met certain conditions. He had treated her with oral abx and advised her to travel and seek out IV abx.

You met two patients of the Alberta ID Dr.?
Is that what you're saying - he isn't able to treat with IV abx?

Well maybe the LLND in Richmond isn't able to do the IV abx either then.

Things have got to change here...it's ridiculous.

Yep I met two patients of the Calgary ID Dr. He is able to prescribe IV abx under certain conditions only - even if he thinks it's the best treatment under other conditions as well.

It is beyond ridiculous. I feel so angry sometimes. Especially when I think how badly I was treated by the medical community here. I was even treated for psychosis at one point despite no evidence/ symptoms that I was psychotic. Just ill.

Did you see the Ottawa Lyme conference testimonials? Patient after patient talking about the horrendous treatment they received?

If this was the way I was treated I can't imagine how someone less "credible" would be. I doubt ticks are discriminating - I'm sure they are biting people with psychiatric illness, people who are close to poverty or the homeless, people who aren't very articulate, etc. It's criminal.
