How to take doxycicline

Hello,

I am starting doxycicline pfizer Brand vibramycin. It seems the pills are also dispersible in water. But the leaflet says we can take the whole pill and swallow it.
Anyone using this brand? How do you take it?

I don’t know what brand I had - but I just swallowed them with a glass of water and ate a meal right after.

So yours will dissolve in water?

I think that might burn the throat?

Don’t take calcium or magnesium close to it - including foods that contain it (cheese, milk..etc)

I am on trouble i already have gerd how Will i manage?
Is there any tetracyclin that does not damagr the stomach?

You could try sandwiching it - eat half your meal - take the doxy - finish your meal..and plenty of water


Minocycline might be better - but I did have some issues with it.
I did have some issues with my throat prior to taking any abx though.
It was one of my symptoms and some of the abx irritated it.

Girlie did you took doxycicline? Do you still have those pills at home? What type is it ? doxycycline hyclate or mono-hydrated?

I don’t have them anymore - they were round tablets (not caps) and I think a reddish colour.

It was my first antibiotic - and now that I think of it - the doxy was fine - no issues but the mino did bother my throat.

I have reflux and have taken doxycycline before. the tablets can cause irritation on the throat, the capsules though didn't bother my throat at all. i took them with a full glass of water, and some food, and made sure not to lay down for a few hours after taking them. i was good. no issues with minocycline either.

From CDC itself:

Doxycycline may also cause nausea and stomach
pain. These side effects can often be lessened
by taking doxycycline with food. Doxycycline
monohydrate, the more expensive type of the
drug, is less likely to upset the stomach than
doxycycline hyclate. Your pharmacist may be able
to dispense one type or the other if you prefer.
Women who use doxycycline may develop a
vaginal yeast infection. You can either take an over
the counter or prescription medication if vaginal
itching or discharge develops.
All medicines may have some side effects. Minor
side effects such as nausea, occasional vomiting,
or diarrhea usually do not require stopping the
antimalarial drug. If you cannot tolerate your
antimalarial drug, see your health care provider;
other antimalarial drugs are available.

i too had stomach pain with doxy, but never with mino. i recommend mino, it's a superior antibiotic for lyme, gets absorbed better than doxy with food, penetrates brain better, you need lower dosage thus chances for it to wreck your liver are lower, it has lower sun burn skin effects, etc...

i never managed to take doxy on empty stomach (painful), but i did mino for several months without problems.

I tried Doxycycline Hyclate caps and tabs. not sure if they were gastro resistant or not. but i did have some trouble with tabs and throat irritation, but no problem with capsules when i did the above to manage the reflux. i moved on to minocycline and have no reflux problems with that.

Hycalate hurts the stomach. Took first One today nothing serious. But afraid on the longo Run. Mpost did you had problems from the first intake?

Yes but false alarm. Stomach started to hurt badly. Guess delayed reaction. Girlie do you know if IV docycycline affects stomach?

I don’t know specifically about doxy but generally IV abx are easier on the stomach - that’s why some people
do the IV abx - to bypass the GI when they have issues.

So did you take the doxy with a full meal?

I took Doxy Hyclate. It made me nauseous so I took it with food. 200mg in the morning and 200 mg at night just before bed to not feel nausea for too long. Usually the night dose by the time I'm guessing that nausea kicked in I was fast asleep smile

There are meds that can coat the stomach - years ago when I was on Naproxen I was prescribed a stomach coating med can't remember the name though I suppose pharmacists can provide guidance. I wonder if something like that might help with Doxy.
