As my name states, I'm a cat lady and have noticed that my beloved 15-year-old kitty has developed some neurological issues. He is falling, walking sideways like a crab, and was stumbling around like he was drunk one day. He is getting up there in age and has other health issues (that have been well-managed for several years), but my vet is not quite sure what is causing the neurological issues. I know Bart can be transferred from pet to human, does anyone know if the reverse is true? My fear is that I passed the Bart or Lyme to him.

Catlady - you don’t think he passed it on to you?

Has he scratched or bitten you?

My cat was asymptomatic and then one day he had a blood clot travel down his back and lodged at the junction of his hind legs - causing extreme pain and paralysis.
He was dying - the vet put him out of his misery a few hours later.
He said he had an undiagnosed heart condition.

I am thinking he had Bartonella that caused the heart issue.

i'm sorry about your kitty, Girlie, that is absolutely horrific.

My cat is indoor only and hasn't ever been exposed to fleas or ticks. Anything is possible, but seems unlikely he would have it. I developed a large rash after being bitten, so seems more likely I got the Bart when I contracted the Lyme.

If I were to think logically, it makes a lot more sense that a pet transmitted an infection to a human rather than the other way around as they tend to have claws and have been known to bite while it doesn't seem as common for a human to go around clawing at or biting their pets. Just my 2 cents but if you both have it, I would bet money it was him giving it to you rather than the other way around, and him having you to care for him is the best gift you could give him so don't ever beat yourself up!

I'm so sorry about your kitty being sick though. I have several kitties and love them dearly too but suspect one of them probably gave me at least one of my infections from clawing and biting the #@$% out of me when I attempted to cut some mats off of him! He insisted on being a mostly outdoor cat despite all of our attempts to keep him in and numerous times I chased after him to bring him back in when he got out. I finally gave up and he was even lost for about 9 months one time. There is no telling what he has, especially as he has been in fights and we've had to nurse his injuries (even though he was neutered as a kitten). We can only do what we can do!
