Hi, I'm new to this site. Back when I believe I contracted Lyme, most of the doctors I went to were dismissive and I'm sure you know the rest of the story. My blood tests were inconsistent and seldom did I test positive for Lyme. In 2009 I had a major attack, precipitated by an overwhelming amount of personal distress. I was then diagnosed by four doctors with MS. The fourth one said no to MS but did not have any real workable answers, except perhaps Lyme. After struggling to get a Polychain Resistant (PCR) test done, the MS doctor literally and reluctantly told me the following: "At some point you had Lyme." She offered no real help, except to put me on a basic antibiotic which was of no help because this had now become Chronic Lyme. So in my search for help it took over 30 years to get a diagnosis and that was after a lot of testing with no answers. I believe I contracted this when I was 20, as I started having bizarre symptoms that I could not really articulate without sounding crazy.
As my body has changed because of pregnancies, and now menopause, I've come to realize that this Lyme bacteria has done quite a bit of damage to my organs. My weak point has always been digestion. I followed the bloodtype diet for a while and lost 23 pounds with no effort, but that was when I was younger. I still refer back to that literature for guidance and understanding of what I am now doing.
I've started the keto diet; still don't fully understand the science behind it, but in about three weeks or so, I've lost five pounds and I am three pounds from my immediate goal. It is challenging because as many of you have written low carbs and low sugar tend to starve the Lyme bacteria. In a non-infected person, this diet provides a wealth of homeostasis in the body, and other good effects. But in a person infected with Lyme, I think that the bacteria fights back to retain its presence in the body. It refuses to be evicted and can trigger the allergy/inflammation loop that many suffer from, which for me unfortunately effects the brain and puts me into strange dimensional thinking. I know it sounds very odd.
I do believe there is a gut/brain connection; therefore, I am hoping that by changing and limiting simple carbs, I am sending a healthy message to my brain for healing. I'm just a bit concerned in my case of the backlash from the Lyme bacteria; because once it goes to my heart, well, I figure I won't be posting anything anymore. LOL!
I was struggling with digestion, but since I cut out breads and pastas, my tummy does feel a lot better. I no longer have Acid Reflux, but I am still mini craving carbs at times. Maybe that's my internal plumbing fighting for me. I certainly hope so, because Western medicine has not helped me AT ALL.
When my daughter had a tick bite, she was about 13. Thank God for her awareness. I immediately had her treated with antibiotics and she has been fine for the most part. She's young and she doesn't let it get to her, as I believe she does have the aches and pains, like I have had for all these years.
The reason why I posted my story is because of the digestion issue. I do believe that is a first line of attack for Lyme sufferers, and I hope some light has been shed for others.
