Parents...hpv vaccine yes or no?

I'm wary of vaccines since I believe receiving the flu and pneumonia vaccines simultaneously triggered my lyme symptoms. I'm wary of the hpv vaccine because it is only 12 years old and though only a small percentage, there have been some extreme side effects. I'm wary of MD's and the CDC because...well you know why.

So even though this is a bit off topic, I'd really appreciate knowing where other parents dealing with lyme come out on whether to give their children the hpv vaccine or not.

CDC and MD's of course say yes. There are groups across the globe that say no. Go to Facebook and search for hpv and you find horror stories.

It only targets 8-9 out of 100 possible strains of hpv. A large percentage of hpv cases resolve on their own.

So in my mind, the issue is do you incur the small risk of side effects to possibly prevent a small risk of hpv?

If I'm missing anything, I'd love to know that too. I'm so torn up about what to do.

This is a decision I have struggled with as well. I have opted not to give it to my 3 kids. I've heard lots of conflicting things about it. Some say that the HPV virus will just mutate or even become stronger. Also, if girls get annual pap smears you can feel more confident that any precancerous cells will be found. I've had 2 abnormal paps. The first one was when I was in college and doctors automatically removed the cells. I had another one in 2015 and this time they biopsied and due to the type of cell they just did a repeat pap and it ended up clearing. They automatically do the HPV test during pap smears and mine have always been negative. It may just be that I have a strain that is not tested for or that it is not HPV.

It's a tough decision. The stories of it wrecking lives really scares me. My son had a bad reaction to the new meningitis vaccine so he will not get the second shot for that (nor will my other 2 kids). Doctors (and big pharma commercials!) do a good job of scaring us into getting shots.

I also believe my latent Lyme infection was triggered by a vaccine (Hep A), and because we know I gave Lyme to my kids during pregnancy, we've stopped vaccinating. So my kids will not be getting this one.

But even before I knew I had Lyme, and was completely pro-vax, I had heard enough negative things about the HPV vaccine that we'd decided not to give that particular one.

It's such a hard decision, because all we want to do is protect our kids!

I've read that there has been no proven link between some of the reactions and the vaccine, but I have to wonder if those articles were driven by Big Pharma. I was almost convinced to go forward with it, and then I got scared again.

The other problem in my mind is we don't know if there's a long-term impact since it's only 12 years old.

I didn't take comfort from the pediatrician stating he'd given it to his children. Don't all MD's love vaccines?

It is a very difficult decision.

So here is my take. As a 29 yr old male.

I got the HPV vaccine while dating a girl that told me she had HPV. Before the vaccine I was feeling fantastic. Best I had ever felt in my life. After getting it, I immediately developed insomnia. Never had that before in my life. That was in 2014. Fast forward to January 2016 and that is when I started getting clear cut lyme symptoms with no tick bite. In my opinion it was due to my immune system being weak from various different life stressors. I believe the first breakdown in my immune system was caused by the HPV vaccine. Vaccines themselves are not bad as a concept, however if you have dormant lyme (which I think a percentage of the population does) then the vaccine can distract your immune system and cause the lyme to grow.

The HPV vaccine is only good for a few strains as you say and many HPV infections clear up on their own. There isn't even a test for males to see if they carry HPV that I am aware of. I would steer clear of the vaccine and I will not let my kids get it in the future.

I would recommend only getting the minimum vaccines. For example, don't get the chicken pox vaccine, flu, or HPV. Only get vaccinated for deadly pathogens that can kill you.

My friend's 18 yo daughter died a few days after receiving it. They think it was something that reacted with the birth control she was on.

Yeah, there was a lawsuit and money was awarded from the manufacturer of the vaccine. Yeah, really sad.

I had to do the HPV vaccine when I was applying for a permanent resident card about 10 years ago. It was mandatory back then along with hiv and tb testing. I couldn't say no to it. Now I think of it why and how it was mandatory. Isn't it discriminatory to force people to do that???? I was under 26 back then.

PDX - that is frightening! I'm sure there have been other lawsuits too.

I noticed the pediatrician handed me flyers for meningitis vaccine and another too, but the only one she pushed was hpv. Didn't even mention the others. That makes me even more wary.

Confused - I think some states have looked into making it mandatory and maybe succeeded based on your post. So many vaccines are mandatory for babies. I'm sorry you didn't get a choice.

Incidentally, I was diagnosed with HPV in my 20s and it's now gone. Totally went away on its own. For a few years I had genital warts that had to be frozen off (Planned Parenthood does it), but it was actually not a big deal. Whenever I saw one, I got it frozen off. I also had no other symptoms whatsoever. IMHO there is a lot of unnecessary hype about HPV. Neither my doctor nor Planned Parenthood were worried about it. Keep your immune system healthy. In my case, HPV was a somewhat embarrassing annoyance, especially when I had to disclose to new boyfriends.

HPV is the cause of most Cervical cancers -


BUT, cervical cancer caught early is one of the more treatable cancers there is. (+90%)
So, if pap tests are done regularly, it will usually be caught in the pre-cancer stage.

Kat1000, if you look into this further you will find the rate at which teens go through with the full course (I think it is or was 2/3 shots) is a very low percentage. I believe this is due to adverse reactions that go untalked about by mainstream medicine. There is a push from most health departments as to how to increase compliance in getting all the doses but it is kind of laughable. I was involved in a meeting with this.

A lot of my friends are 100% provax and got this vaccine and regretted it. My son will be getting a few vaccines-this will not be one of them.

Good plan. I looked at each one individually when my son was younger.

Some, I thought he was just too young for - like Hep C - it was offered when he was 11 or 12. (He was not sexually active or doing IV drugs) so I postponed that one for several years.
Of course I had people saying "How do you know he's not?"

Well...because he's upstairs playing with leggo...that's why.

opugirl - is there a site to find out the percentage in my state? I've been asking a lot of parents, and I keep hearing we did 1 shot and had a bad reaction...

Also hearing that someone died is alarming. I have a problem with a vaccine that can result in death, regardless of percentages.

Maybe the reason the percentage of side effects is low is because the percentage getting vaccinated is low?

My children are not sexually active either. I don't see that happening anytime soon. In my state, they can get the vaccine with 2 rounds if under 15, 3 rounds if over 15. They claim it's more effective if they get it when they are younger than say 18 or older. I don't know why age would matter.

Regardless of sexual activity, my concern is about the side effects. It just feels too new and unknown to take the risks.

I don't have a dog in this fight. However, I did watch a movie (probably banned now) called VAXXED.

It goes into the dangers of these vaccines. I had just gotten out of the military when the big push came for the SWINE FLU shots. Saw all these people lined up, just felt something wasn't right so didn't take the shot.

Heck, was in the middle of the pacific ocean and was getting "another" shot from the medic, when I asked what this shot was for, was told it was for ROCKY MOUNTAIN FEVER. Heck, didn't know wood ticks could swim!

If I had a daughter I wouldn't let her get the shot. To go back in history, I remember getting a polio shot via NEEDLE. So this would have been in 1955 or so. Now we find out that many of the polio vaccines were containimated with the SV 40 virus which causes cancer. Over 100 million children were given this shot...now a major outbreak of cancer in our society.

Yesterday I had my annual physical with a doctor affiliated with a major chicago hospital. I asked about the vaccine. The first response was the standard response about when it should be given and what it is supposed to do. Then...as a mom, I'm not giving it to my kids. I thanked her for her honesty, but wow! I asked why, and she's concerned about triggering autoimmune issues. I thought that was very interesting.
