I just recently moved out of a moldy house (that I had been living in from almost 3 years), and I lost most of my things. Based on how I feel in the new place, I don't think there is any mold. Therefore, I am wanting to branch out and get a new non-toxic mattress. I am learning how toxic most beds are, and I don't want to compromise the healing from being out of mold.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for non-toxic mattresses? I'm tired of sleeping on an air mattress, but didn't want to shell out that much money until I knew I had one that wouldn't make me sicker.

I will be watching this post, as I am in the same boat. I'm supposed to be looking for a new non-moldy house. When I find one, I will need a real mattress, too. Been sleeping on an air mattress or sofa nearly 2 years now. It's giving me back pain.

Definitely. My neck and back are killing me today. Air mattresses aren't ideal. But you gotta do what you gotta do. Here's a great link for you to check out.

I am looking at a few of them. I really like the sound of an Avocado mattress, but I don't know if it's within my budget right now.

Let me know if you have any questions about the mold thing. It's a pain in the butt. But I am so so happy I am out of it now.

Avocado green and loom and leaf are two good ones that are relatively affordable. I would recommend the topper on avocado green. Both have great return policy if they don’t work out.

Intellibed and naturepedic are expensive but non-toxic.

Thanks! How did you find a house that's clean enough?

I'm so scared and overwhelmed about house hunting. I live in the Southeast where humidity is high and mold and water damaged buildings are the rule instead of the exception, and no one here seems to even notice it unless they have CIRS.

Were you diagnosed with CIRS?

I bought avocado green and really liked it. My nerve symptoms (mostly restless leg) decreased while sleeping. However, my nose started itching like crazy while sleeping. I am allergic to latex but usually those with latex allergy are more contact allergy. I don’t know if it was the issue or not and didn’t want to get stuck with a mattress that caused more issues so I sent it back. Full refund and no charge to pick up. I’m going to order loom and leaf and pray I don’t react. They do charge $100 shipping to return.

My daughter has a kids naturepedic and it’s good but way too firm!

Also if you google 'coconut mattresses' there are a few companies that make those. Super expensive-but also note that IF you are allergic to latex, banana and avocado are in the same family so you may be susceptible to being allergic to an avocado mattress!

That is a new one to me though...I love avocados!

I actually am allergic to bananas now too. I found that they were causing my lump in throat sensation (eggs cause it too). Avoiding those two and I no longer have it. I’ve wondered about avocados - they make my mouth itch. Thank god my reactions are not severe but I feel like every year there’s a few more things I can’t tolerate.

@walkingbyfaith, I am in the Souheast too. I honestly think I just got lucky. I didn’t do any preliminary testing. I just based it off of how I felt in the apartment. Usually I react within minutes of being around mold. I had spent about an hour here and didn’t start getting dizzy. So I just went on a whim and based on the report of no water damage or leaks too the leap of faith and went for it. I honestly, prayed about it and just hoped God would lead me to a clean place. So far I think I am good. I am actually able to breathe here.

K07, I didn’t know that about the $100 shipping to send it back. It would almost be worth the extra cash to buy the avocado one. I don’t think I am allergic to latex, but I guess we could see.

this is awesome that you moved out the moldy home * : ( I have yet to tackle that on my to do list ;( There's a lot of mold in the bathtub where i shower every day, and there's no ventilation in the bathroom.

check out JannyOrganically.com she has a blog post and she does a lot of research on non toxic mattresses and everything else non toxic. she's amazing! and can help you with any information you're looking for on that..

Yea, I had to move out of mold. I had 3 of the worst kinds of mold at that apartment. It was affecting my lungs, sinuses, and brain big time. I was so miserable there. I have high hopes for the new place. It has to be better than where I was.

I had looked into non toxic mattresses a couple of years ago that I saw referenced on Debra Lynn Dadd's website. I remember they were very expensive.

The only options I recall were either wool or other natural toppers that had to be taken outside to air out (not happening here) that would be prone to mold (already a major issue), or they were latex.

As some of you have already mentioned, latex can be allergenic. It can be deadly for some. My impression of latex allergy is that it is right up there with peanut allergy for it's severe and life-threatening potential. I am allergic to shellfish, so I know I could develop more allergies. I avoid latex where possible to reduce that potential.

I've heard commercially available mattresses are loaded with chemicals from fire retardants, but you can get a mattress without the fire retardants. Has anyone done that - gotten a regular mattress without fire retardants and gotten an encasement cover to go over it?

Just wondering what options I have. I have mold sensitivity and chemical sensitivities. Seems like what is ideal for one is bad for the other.

I looked into this a bit. The hubby and I purchased a two mattresses post lyme...(I think) since I have been diligent about more natural products. Given the cost of a lot of natural mattresses we ended up going with pretty standard ones, letting them 'off-gas' outside in UV light for a bit. And then getting a sealed mattress cover (that wasn't crinkly!).

I am pretty allergic to mold but aside from that no allergies. Chemical sensitivities vary. I would have love to go all natural but I couldn't justify or really pay for the cost and so far we are about 5 yrs in on both and no known side effects.

The very best source for information on non toxic mattresses is gimmethegoodstuff.org. I ended up going with a company called Essentia mattress and LOVE it.
