Hi there all.
Just wanted to put this out here...perhaps someone has had the same experience or can comment.
(back story: I cycle regularly...300-500km a week. I´m 53 years old male. Was diagnosed with cardio st depression two years ago but got rid of it (and 14 kilo of fat) and had a full cardio workup just 3 months ago. My recovery heart rate from exertion is very good...my heart can recover 40 beats in 30 seconds...so I can go from 160bpm down to 110/120 after 30 seconds of rest.My Cardio health is good)
For the last three weeks or so I have been dealing with temporary bouts of nausea...not connected to eating or after food. Just waves of nausea that would come out of nowhere. No feelings of fainting simply nausea.
A few times I would awake because of the nausea....interestingly eating would take the nausea away.
Anyway, the other day I go to a tea house with a friend. I order a ginger tea (from what I had heard) thinking that ginger has a positive effect on the stomach and digestion.
When the tea arrived and I poured a cup I found it was really really really really strong. The tea was a dark dark gloomy yellow colour and my friend found it to be totally undrinkable.
In 20 minutes I managed to drink one cup.
Half an hour later (now at home) I suddenly experience a strong pulse of nausea but then it gets even weirder....I begin to grey out. I feel faint even though I´m sitting down. I check my BPM and find its at 45.
That´s not good.
I take some deep breaths and get on my feet and then check my BPM again and see its near 50.
At this point I decide to walk a few blocks over to the district emergency clinic. On the way I check my BPM and its still jumping around 45/50/110/50.....
The Doctor sees me immediately and the EKG shows an extra spike on the graph and an ambulance is called and I´m taken straight to the hospital. MY heart is stabilizing...I feel fine. Full examination in the hospital....full blood panel done and no signs of anything ...negative D-dimer and no cardio incident bio markers. Pottasium and Magnesium levels are good.
Cardiologist told me to continue normal life, cycling and lifestyle should not change at all.
I was told to follow up with my own cardiologist (I´ll do a full work up) and that was that.
So, I have the conviction that the super super super strong Ginger root tea triggered Bradycardia.....has anyone had a similar experience? Are there other triggers that people have had from food or drink that makes Bradycardia show up?
