Hi running wild, oh yes I had the same problem. Drove me crazy that I had to be like a turtle with treatments. I'd often overestimate my capacity for handling antimicrobials and that got me in trouble over and over again (I'm stubborn). But I do think contextualizing this as a marathon is a good idea, try and pace things according to what you can manage within reason. Some of those herbs can be incredibly strong, sometimes we find out via trial and error, but once you realize you are responding strongly (and beyond what you consider ok for yourself) it's a good idea to taper back and try and find the sweet spot.
When I first started cryptolepis early on in my treatment journey each time I took a few drops it felt like a bolt of lightning would strike the back of my head! the herxing was vicious... it got better after a while, but that lesson taught me to respect the herbs and their potency!
Also, one can make progress even with low dosages. Work it up as you can, but don't think you can only make progress with full doses... the key is maintaining balance in the body and not overtaxing its systems by driving the herxing into a realm that completely flips the bodies' systems out. This I do think can be counterproductive especially if the herxing maintains at that level over significant periods. If you sense it will possibly ease up soon can be worth pushing through, but usually best course of action is trying to find the sweet spot.
(edit) I was looking at your profile and just realized that running is part of your profession! (maybe I should've suspected that based on your handle!) so I guess the marathon analogy fits right in with that
