What is everyone’s thoughts on getting the flu shot if you have Lyme? Should I get it? Does it make symptoms flare?

I thought I caught the flu once from someone who got the nasal vaccine. Not sure if that is possible though.

Regardless of Lyme - I won’t ever get a flu shot.

A) The flu doesn’t usually cause me too much grief - in fact most years I don’t get it.

B) The flu shot often isn’t even effective. I read last years was not.

C) With lyme it’s not a good idea to get the flu vaccine - it can affect our immune system adversely.

I got really sick after getting the flu shot the year I was diagnosed. I believe I had lyme then but didn't know it. My LLNDs (two of them) have told me never to get it again. I didn't last year. Not planning on it this year. It makes me a little nervous, but then again, a lot of the people who died last year had had the flu shot. Plus, buhner has a treatment for septic shock, which i think is what actually causes the death. I try to keep those ingredients on hand...

My chronic Lyme symptoms started a few days after a flu vaccine. I believe the vaccine triggered chronic Lyme in me.

My Lyme symptoms also started after receiving vaccinations, Hep A/B & Typhoid. I also believe the vaccines triggered my Lyme disease. I have heard this from other Lyme patients as well. Gardasil is another one to watch out for.

I have gotten the flu shot yearly for at least the last 10 years. Been treating for Lyme and co infections for the last 5 years. Knock on wood, I have never had any issues with adverse reactions or flares of Lyme symptoms after receiving the shot. Two out of the last three llmd's that have treated me have recommended flu shots.

Note, there’s speculation that it’s the aluminum in these vaccines that impact your immune system. Most notably its being mercury toxic that causes you body to be unable to detox aluminum.

Mercury toxicity normally comes from amalgams (silver tooth fillings) and or the unsafe removal.

I traced many issues back to when I have mine removed in the late 90s.

mercury also comes from eating a lot of fish - I think mostly the bottom feeders.

Yep, tuna too.

There's also thimerosal, a mercury containing compound, thats used as a preservative in vaccines.

I have never had the flu shot, nor will I ever get it.
I don't recommend. What I do recommend is doing the best to boost your immune system, taking time to slow down and taking care of yourself.

I have to get the flu shot every year for work. This will be my fourth time getting it with Lyme. So far I haven't noticed any problems. (Knocks on wood)

My husband works for our provincial health care - and he is refusing the shot this year - but may have to wear a mask when he’s out in the community.

Are you given that option?

Nope, in the military it is considered a lawful order. I'm not sure what would happen if I refused but I know it wouldn't be good.

Interesting, you could make a point to have some DMPS and/or DMSA on hand. Try to mop up some of the toxins immediately after the injection.

Before I knew I had lyme, I received a TDAP shot. It was after that that all of my lyme symptoms came to a head. I have never taken the flu shot.

I have been an office manager for 20 years at a health facility. I have noticed that the employee's that get the flu shot seem to have more sick absences then the employees that don't get it.

Vaccines are important. No, people who get the flu shot don’t get sick more than other people. Complete myth. If you’re worried about the state of your immune system then make sure you get the injection (the shot is inactive). I’d stay away from active vaccines like the nasal spray since they have some of the real virus in them, but there’s no harm in getting the shot. I got mine last week and I feel totally fine.

As a side note, polio is making a come back because people aren’t getting their vaccines. It’s awful.

The FDA & CDC, who adamantly believe that our disease doesn't exist, say vaccines are safe. There are far too many personal experiences that say otherwise.

Sure, there's some room for debate on the effectiveness and safety of some vaccines. That's not the same thing as saying you should never get any vaccines at all (which is what some people in this thread seem to support). That line of thinking is dangerous and unfounded.

Well the topic was flu shot - whether or not to get it.


For the most part that's what the posts are about in addition to some testimonies that their lyme symptoms started after a vaccination.

We Lymies already have impaired immune systems. 80,000 people died last year from the flu. I've gotten the flu vaccine for the last 20+ years because as a P A It was policy to do so. I never had a problem and haven't had the flu since the mid 90's. I'll be getting it soon.
Remember it doesn't cover every flu virus just the ones that are emrging from the Far East rapidly.

For those of you who may want an alternative to the flu shot you may wish to try Boiron's Influenzinum 9C as a flu preventive. It is based on the same viruses as the flu shot and updated most years just as the flu shot is. This year's updated version will be available late Oct or early Nov. You can easily tell if it is this year's updated version if the expiration date is 5 years from the year of fall. (2018 plus 5 = 2023). This year's version is not available as yet. My functional med doc gave me a protocol to follow for prevention and since starting to use Influenzinum 3 years ago I have not gotten the flu. This product can also be used to decrease duration and symptoms of flu if you already have it.
