Just curious . . . anyone have symptoms in their bladder/kidney region (i.e. pain in bladder area, back, sometimes stabbing pain migrating down to groin area)?  My 16 year old daughter has been having these symptoms for a week now and our lyme specialist said it could be the lyme bacteria, or it could be a bladder/kidney infection.  He directed us to our internist who sent her urine out to be tested.  The quick test didn't show an infection, although the urine is dark in color.  We will know on Monday.  She also says that she does get a burning sensation when she tries to stop urination, so it does sound like an infection. 

Has anyone noticed that since they have been diagnosed that they urinate less than normal, even though they are drinking?  This has been a common issue since the diagnosis.  At the onset she wouldn't get the sensation to urinate even though she would have consumed fluids during the day.  Now she notices that she has to urinate, but has trouble emptying her bladder.  Our lyme specialist said that sometimes the inflammation around the bladder makes it difficult to push the urine out.  I don't know anything about it.

Does anyone know if pomegranate juice and/or cranberry juice can change the color of urine?  She has been on a kick of drinking this (cut with water) for a week now.  Getting fluids in her is difficult so the fact that she loves these juices and will drink them is good news to me.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks so much.

I've had recurrent kidney pain since I first tried prescription antibiotics about 9 months after I'd become symptomatic. My kidney pain usually clears up when I stop taking anything that kills the various infections and returns within about 3-4 days of resuming anything with an anti-microbial effect.

While I think the live bacteria/protozoa themselves can cause kidney pain, I know that all the toxins created from the massive die off always causes kidney pain. Remember the job of your kidneys is to clean toxins out of the body, and you'll feel the inflammation and irritation in them as pain when they get overloaded with excessive amounts of toxins. I deal with it by pulsing my antimicrobial nutraceuticals to give them time to "catch up" and of course by continuing to drink at least a half-gallon of water daily.

I just wanted to add that I have all the bladder and kidney issues and have NOT done abx. So it can indeed be from the Lyme itelf and not only from abx die-off. Sometimes I will have the bacteria show up in the urine test but not always. (mine has "junk" in it too) (:   D

Thank you very much -- all of you.  I was very worried that her kidneys might become damaged from the treatment/bacteria.  The internist is going to check her organ functions for me, too.  Also, her ferritin level was low according the Dr. J's blood work results, so I am having that checked again.  She has babesia, too, and maybe she needs some iron along with everything else.  Thank you so much again.  Lisa

Lyme and co-infections are known to cause chronic bladder/urinary tract issues. Many lyme patients, including myself, have bee afflicted with chronic bladder pain/inflammation known as interstitial cystitis. For me this has been the most debilitating symptoms as all. I am thankful that is is clearing up now that I am improving.

I did the abx route for 3 years but the treatment was not successful. I was at my sickest while on mycobutin/zithromax for supposed bartonella that is now being diagnosed as the "mystery bug". I am no longer doing abx as I do not think they are the answer for me - I think they have actually made my situation worse. I spent 2 weeks at the Hansa Center with Dr. Jernigan, I did an aggressive natural based IV treatment with a naturopath and I am now working with an acupuncturist/natural healer - with this person I am doing specific chinese herbs to help heal the kindneys/bladder/urinary tracts as well as some immune supporting supplements. I also do FIR sauna on a regular basis and I have a rife machine. I hope this answers your questions. I believe the IV treatment that I did with the naturopath is what is pushing me to the other side. Time will tell but everyday I keep improving. I'm sure there will be some dips in the road but I'm very confident and hopeful that I am on the path to getting my life back. Oh...I also drink lots of marshmallow root tea made from the bulk herb - not the tea bags. This is very helpful with bladder/kidney issues.

Thank you.  I wish you continued success with your treatment.  We are only 2 1/2 months into treatment.  Some positives are coming out of it -- hair not falling out any more, menstral cycle back on track, headaches not as excrutiating, however, then the bladder and kidney issues are new ones so it's a trade off.  Take care and thanks again.  Lisa

Hi Lisa.  I am sorry your daughter is having these symptoms. 

Babesiosis can cause dark urine.  It is listed as one of the symptoms.  I have had this from Babesiosis.  Is she being treated for it now?

Hi Ticker,

Yes, she started meds for babesiosis on 11/21/08.  She is taking Mepron 750 mg. 2 tsp/day and the herb Artemisinin 200 mg 2x/day.  Her doctor is the well-known pediatric lyme specialist, "Dr. J" in CT, and he tells us that this co-infection takes some time to eradicate.  So we wait.  She also cannot stand or walk from the lyme, so right now we are doing physical therapy, but are looking into a physiatrist and possible in-patient therapy down the road.  She is also taking meds for the lyme bacteria, and she started those on 10/31/08.

I know that this co-infection is like having malaria, but do you know what other symptoms come from it?  Have you recovered from any of the lyme/babesia symptoms yet?  The big question of when relief will come is one I always ask, but I know it is an individual thing.  Dr. J said that she will be on all of these meds for at least six months, long term a year. 

Some positive things that have come from meds:  hair has stopped falling out, headaches don't always feel like she is being beat with a bat, menstral cycle more on track, overall emotional state is better as she has been in such a good mood this past week.  However, back, joint pain, headaches, light sensitivity, and inability to stand or walk still continue.  Making some progress at least!

I have babs, and I was on the Mepron and Artemesinin course for at least 9 months. I had a horrible relapse, and it wasn't until I went on the Zithromax that I began to recover again. Mepron and Art. aren't enough by themselves. I'd suggest Zithro or Biaxin or something in that family.

She is on Zithromax and Plaquenil as well. She started those on 10/31/08.

My question is there any cure for this bladder issue, I have had the same for 2 months and it is baffling my LLND.
It isn't IC but it seems to be bladder as I feel the need to void and its difficult to control it, to slow not emptying, etc.

Sorry to hear about your kidneys.

Lyme and coinfections can cause havoc on many organs. Kidneys are working overtime to clean the blood of amonia, biofilm, infection etc etc.

My kidneys have gone through several periods of immense pain. Treating with Chinese or aryuvedic herbs has been very helpful.

Drinking a shot of apple cider vinegar in a shot of water or 1 tsp of baking soda in a cup of water really helps too.

Do not rule out kidney stones. I just went through this. I have had them before but this time it started by hitting me in the testicles and then to the ER. The scariest part was not knowing what was going on because it is such a tender area to begin with but they did a CT scan and found a few stones. The pain was referred from my kidney on down. I just passed the stone last week, waiting to see what the next stone does, but a lot of people get kidney stones and either never know it or know it by the pain, then pass them without knowing. I caught this latest stone so I knew it.
