Candida <-> Vitamin D <-> Thyroid

I am just wonder if any one before has explored issues related to vitamin D deficiency, and its relation to candida and/or thyroid dysfunction.

recently found out i was mildly deficiency in Vitamin D, then after looking into that i found it there is a relation to yeast infections, as well as in some causes thyroid disorders. I think i have had candida for a while, probably 1-2 years and have tried various things while taking antibiotics without success. recently my thyroid TSH jumped up above normal range, suspected due to minocycling/rifabutin, then normalized after i stopped the antibiotics.

since finding out about the vitamin d deficiency, i have starting supplementing Vitamin D3. from reading i see there are two schools of thought with getting that level up, supplementing with weekly loading dose of 50000IU for 6-8 weeks, then to a maintenance dose, OR daily dosing 4000 to 6000IU. currently i am daily dosing until i can get into my PCP or the endocrinologist to see if i can do the weekly loading dose approach.

was curious if anyone went down this road before and if things were magically fixed by simply supplementing with D3, wishful thinking i know. but wondering if i have a better shot of ridding myself of candida, if my vitamin D levels are strong.

I tend to analyze things to death, including this topic in the past.

Having hashimoto for 20 years and found low on the D-25 test ten years ago, I decided to supp with D3 up to about 60-70. It did absolutly nothing that I could tell besides up the D test into normal.

I've had raging candida with low and high levels of D. D supps did nothing for thyroid levels either.

In fact I stopped using D this fall in a low winter sun state (almost no sun with all clouds for two months). While on same thyroid med and no supp of D, thy levels increased from when I used D and got sunlast summer.

My thyroid levels went up from a low cytokine diet.

Conclusion, vit D levels dont do anything that I can feel, not even mental health. I will try again, when im not changing other stuff, but I think D is a waste of $ in my case.

thank you both. yeah i wasnt sure if i would feel any improvement either, curious if it has any indirect effect on other things. like if it makes candida any easier to deal with.

but i am going to get my levels up to 50-60 and see where it leads me. it sounds like it takes a while to get them up, a few months.

I have had low vitamin D and high PTH for 3-4 years. I was supplementing 5000 vegan D drops made from seaweed bs lanolin( wool allergy) my level keeps dropping. My endo RX 50,000 units, one pill per week in May, but after two pills I developed a severe reflux reaction and I stopped all vit D until my next blood work. I’m getting my next blood work 2 months late next week and I will see what has happened to vit D levels. I may have primary hyperparathyroidism because I was and may still be excreting a lot of calcium in urine.

I would say be cautious with high dose tx vit D, especially the 50,000 dose one pill per week or even higher doses.

If you have yeast infections check your blood glucose levels if you haven’t.

Thanks meowee. i will be cautious with this. my glucose is right in the middle of the reference range, so that is good. my PTH was last checked back in January, it was good then. at that time my Vitamin D was within normal range.

i will have to get PTH checked again given the drop in Vitamin D.

I haven't tried the candida antibody tests, maybe i will try that, just for additional evidence with my PCP...even though she visibly knows i have it given my symptoms.

i have had no luck ridding it, while on continuous antibiotics. hoping that now, doing lighter antiobitic pulsing with coupled with diflucan, and other supplements, i have a better shot at it.

I do the Rx Vit D - 50,000. When started, my levels were 25. It took some time to get the levels up. At some point, I was told to switch to OTC supplements. Then I discovered those are the either derived from lanolin or lichen (something like that), so I opted to stay on the Rx and just take it every 2 weeks for maintenance.

I’ve been on it for years now. The best my levels ever got was when I was taking the Rx and also drinking 8 oz of Silk almond milk every day. When I stopped drinking the milk, my levels dropped. The almond milk helped more than the Rx.

Isn’t lichen a plant?

What is the prescription d made from

Does hyperparathyroid actually mean anything other than elevated calcium? Because I also have that but from google research it doesn't seem like it is much of a threat.

Are you looking into the hyperparathyroid issue?
Have you looked at the symptom list for it?

Yes I have Girlie, my endo tests it every blood work since I had one high calicum level and elevated pth. He thinks it it is secondary hyperparathydroidism due to low vit d, but since I’m excreting a lot of calcium I’m worried it is primary, but so far my pth is not as high as most people with tumors. And my calcium is in the 9’s. My endo would not do a scan, so I may have to got to another doc at some point.

You can have primary hyper pt without high calcium levels for a long time because your kidneys excrete excess calcium and your body lowers vit D to keep blood calcium low. Many endos will treat primary hyper pt with vit D to get the pth levels down, which is not good from what I have read. You can end up with kidney damage. You should never take calcium supplements or high levels of vit D unless you have a real reason, get your calcium from food.

The vitamin D drops I take are made from lichen. I was getting itchy rashes which I have had on and off and I was worried it was from the vitamin D I was taking made from lanolin so I switched to this one. I get them at Amazon, it is cheaper there I think.

Low vitamin D can be a side effect of antibiotics, or any drug that induces CYP3A4.

However, the reverse effect also occurs. Taking too much vitamin D will induce CYP3A4, and interfere with the antibiotics.

So... supplement the vitamin D if necessary, but don't overdo it. 50,000 IU is definitely not a good idea.

Most of the abx I have taken don’t interact adversely with vitamin d intake. (Ceftin, mino, bactrim...)

Does anyone know if PTH jumps quickly when there is a problem. mine was last checked in Feb, it was on the lower end, which is good. i will be getting it rechecked again.

I don’t know and I cant find anything about it. People with parathyroid tumors usually have very high levels. If you read the website Girlie posted it explains a lot. No mention of how quickly it goes up. I talked to people who had surgery and who also had normal blood calcium levels at first but the pth level was much higher than mine.

I’ve already been to to that link a long time ago when my calcium and pth went up. They have alot of good info however I opted not to become a patient there since they do not take any insurance, they charge huge prices in advance just to look at your blood work and they do surgery to figure out if you actually have a tumor based on blood work alone even if a scan is negative. It also would require a long distance trip. I am very suspicious of doctors who refuse any ins coverage and who charge large fees etc.

I wasn’t saying to go to the site for surgery - but to look at the information - ie calcium and pth level... and symptom list.. etc

Yes I understand you were not recommending surgery, lol. My comments are for those who are in my situation with high pth and low d without a definitive diagnosis yet, who do go there and then contact them about being a patient, so they can know what to expect and why I chose not to become a patient. They will not even review your blood work without charging a huge fee not covered by ins. Any reimbursement you may get is up to you as far as I recall.
