Bartonella success stories using antibiotics?

Some weeks I have 2 to 3 days no symptoms, but then out of now where flare of nasty bart symptoms that last a week or so.

Been treating for almost 2 years.


I had a good run of several months being about 98 % better but then started backsliding.

Still way better than in the beginning, but longing for an end to all of this.

Hey guys! So it's been roughly around 16 months of Bart treatment with Clarithro and Rifampin (I was infected with just Bart, no co-infections.) It's been more than a month and a half since stopping antibiotics, and I've had no symptoms, no return/ relapse. Most of my symptoms had gone by the 14th or 15th month except for knee pain, so I assumed that joint damage must have occurred but recent imaging showed no joint damage. I was told there can be lingering inflammation for some time, even after stopping treatment (and it doesn't mean Bart hasn't been successfully gotten rid of). While I did have some inflammation for a few days/ the first week after stopping, even that has gone now. The knee pain/inflammation (whatever that was) has improved to the point where it's non-existent now, and seeing as there's no joint damage (even though Bart DID target my joints the most) it now seems to have healed, the meniscus is fine, the tendons are fine, there's no damage anywhere, everything that was a problem has healed. All other symptoms have also gone.

So just thought I'd share this because my knees were my worst symptom and I never thought that would go away. I thought for many hopeless months that Bartonella would never leave my life or respond to antibiotics - but it seems to have done that! I have kept Buhner's tinctures at home as a safety precaution in case I ever feel like a relapse is coming, but don't feel the need because at this point I do think i'm cured. For me, it's taken a year and roughly four months to get rid of the Bart - I couldn't tolerate super high doses too rapidly.

But anyway, at this point, I'm facing really bad luck in a completely unrelated area (unrelated to Bart) due to bad luck with dental crowns - they cracked and have caused me to have an uneven bite for around a year now, and it's finally shown up as a TMD problem that i'm scared i'll have to live with for the rest of my life. Is there a TMJ/TMD section on healingwell? Thanks so much!

Wow, that is incredibly encouraging to hear. I'm also treating for bart and Babs (bart being the main one for me) and my doctor also prescribed Clarithro and rifampin as well. I recently switched to rifabutin after making some progress on rifampin and in the middle of a herx hell right now... did you doctor have you switch to rifabutin at some point? Or are those 2 the only abx you took the entire time?

Is rifabutin with minocycline considered a successful treatment?

Very encouraging for the members who have a stubborn Bart infection.

So happy to hear your treatment has been successful. I was just thinking about you recently and wondered how you were doing. Did you stay with Dr. M for the duration of treatment?

As for the teeth, I would strongly advise you see a biological dentist. You don’t want that dental issue to suppress your immune system and cause a relapse down the road. Please check out the IAOMT website for dental information and help finding a biological dentist. Dental issues are common among those with Lyme and bartonella.

I’m curious. Did you have any chemical sensitivities when you got bartonella - sensitivities to things like fragrance, smoke, cleaning products?

Hey @xpeetzax, I took Rifampin and Clarithro but that's because I went slower with it. Rifabutin was in store for me if I did not herx badly enough with the Rifampin, but Rifampin turned out to be enough for me I think. Rifabutin is also very effective against Bart I believe.

Hey WalkingbyFaith! No, no chemical sensitivities to fragrance/ other stuff when I got Bart. My dental issues have been ever since I got a new set of crowns that were really ill fitting. They're not toxic or anything, it's just that the fit has been wrong from the start. I recently saw a TMJ specialist for the first time and showed him my imaging reports. He indicated it has everything to do with my uneven crowns (it's clearly uneven, even on imaging). At the moment I'm wearing a splint to prevent me from clenching and once my muscles come out of spasm hopefully then I'll start healing and eventually the crowns will be altered - but it's caused one disc to be displaced in my right jaw, and now I think it's happened to my left jaw too sad(. At the moment I'm really bummed out by this - considering I had finally come out of Bart! argh. But I am taking a Celergen supplement which is supposed to really help heal joints and discs. But I've never had tmj ever, till these awful crowns, so I really hope I can be free of this and heal from the damage it's caused.
