Can steroid shot make me worse???

I have 3 pinched nerves in lower lumbar.. no therapy will not work or heat or ice or stretching... the vertebrae has shifted forward pinching nerves.. sciatica.. I have to wait to have surgery but I need relief... I have heard that steroids can make your Lyme worse... but I'm not sure whether they mean oral.. or shot... I'm going to the best Lyme clinic in the country next week and they are telling me that it's fine to have the shot but yet everything on the internet says no..... any suggestions please!!!!!!

Generally I think it means oral steroids in higher doses.
(Doses used to treat autoimmune diseases) as it suppresses the immune system - allowing the infections to go unchecked and worsen.

Some Lyme patients take low doses of hydrocortisone when their cortisol levels are too low - and that doesn’t seem to be an issue...

I don’t know how high the dose is in shots used for pain relief.

Have you considered the prolotherapy?
I read about it a few years ago - a friend of mine got one treatment.

Yes I know all that.. but please read steroid shots and lyme.. tell me what you think... I'm confused..... but also in pain

Steroid shots are definitely a no-no if you are suffering from lyme and co since it suppresses the immune system. A good doctor should already know that and refuse to administer steroids if you are fighting a chronic infection. You will have to find another way to deal with your pinched nerve.

I myself am taking cortisol daily to counteract the effects of one of my antibiotic drugs I take but in very small dosages. Even then, my doctors are concerned the steroids may be hampering my progress.

Like I said before I know steroids are a No-No I have always heard there are no no for people with Lyme disease but from what most people are telling me they mean oral steroids... because oral steroids go into your stomach and your bloodstream and travel all over your body where is a shot is concentrated and doesn't go anywhere else... I'm getting ready to go to one of the best Lyme clinics in the country this weekend and they are telling me that the shot would be okay... I'm just confused..

I think in your case there are pro's and con's to getting the shot.

There is a chance that the shot will affect your immune system, though a localized shot may not have as much of an effect as an oral pill, as previously mentioned.

However, it appears that the drawback of not getting this shot is dire. You are in pain. It's probably affecting your sleep, exercise, and overall well-being. It may be worth it to get it if your doctor recommends it.

What does your Lyme Dr say about getting the steroid shot?

Like I said before I'm going to one of the best Lyme clinics in the country this weekend I will be there for 4 months for treatment they have told me twice now that the steroid shot in my lower back would be absolutely fine.... I'm just confused on why they say it's okay but everyone else says no..... and I certainly don't want to be going through treatments for 4 months and also battling severe back pain.... and I don't want the shot to mess up my treatments...

Better be safe than sorry. If this place sells themselves as "the best lyme clinic in the country" it's already a little sketch to me.

Proceed at your own risk. You ask for input but it seems your mind is already set on another.

It's obviously not ideal, but I think one shot can usually be ok, especially if pain is intolerable and you have upcoming treatments that will hopefully tackle the infections. Getting pain under control is hugely important for recovery. Is it possible to get on antimicrobials (could be herbs) when you have the shot as a way to hedge? Have you ever tried LDN(low dose naltrxone)?

They do not call themselves the best Lyme clinic in the country.... that is just a label that everyone else has labeled them with... they have treated over 10,000 people successfully with a 95% success rate... after comparing them to Hansa...Evita..Germany.. and many others we have decided they are the ones... they're detox protocol is next to none on how they can get rid of toxins molds and heavy metals... and how doctor sponaugle can break up and dissolve biofilm so rapidly is amazing... but anyway they told me the shot would be fine because the first three weeks I'm there they are doing nothing but detoxing and boosting my immune system.... that's why they said it would be no problem.... but I'm still very unsure.... don't want to do something that's going to mess up my treatments.... and I don't want to be in excruciating pain either

Interesting - I don't know of one that 'everyone' has labeled as the best lyme clinic in the country.
..oh it's the Sponaugle clinic?

Some members here would say that about the Hansa centre.

Those stats: 95% success rate? If that's what the claims are...I'd be cautious....as that doesn't seem realistic when dealing with this disease.

Please do post after you've treated and let us know how it went.

if you do a search on this forum - there are both good reviews and not-so-good reviews. I'd say I've seen more 'good' ones though.

I have been sick for 3 years... I have had the privilege of speaking to thousands of people who have gone to clinics across the u.s.... I have met with some of the biggest Lyme doctors in the country... if you have heard of dr. Neil Spector out of North Carolina he is the Doctor Who almost died and had to have a heart transplant because of Lyme.. we speak every two weeks... I have done my homework believe me on what place to go to... there are many fine places I'm sure... I just try to sponaugle because they are a little bit different... I've also spoken to over 20 different patients that have visited Hansa and Envita and ended up having to go to sponaugle to get the fix

I don't know everything for sure nobody does but I had to Ray the pros and cons and everything led me to sponaugle... just spoke to two doctors yesterday who both had to quit their practices because of lyme and co-infections and they both went to sponaugle one doctors from California one from Colorado... they both make substantial amount of money and could have gone anywhere in the world probably.. that speaks volumes to me I only hope and pray I'm making the right decision
