High TSH - Minocycline?

Yes, i do. with me it crept up over many months of usage, glad my doc included it in my routine blood work, otherwise i would have never known. had i kept goin, i may not have been able to knip it the bud. fortunately i was done with my protocol.

you are pulsing, so maybe that has something to do it with versus daily. but i would still be inclined to testing thyroid monthly. if you read some of the horrors that can happen with mino and thyroid, some people get 'black thyroid' in as little as 2 weeks of usage.

So did you have symptoms?

Yup I posted about the black thyroid a couple years ago.

I only recently started pulsing.
I took my meds daily for over two years (except for a day here and there)

Yes, i have a few symptoms left, i am trying to track them down to thyroid or candida. Cold intolerance, dry skin, cracked tongue. If i do have thyroid issues, i belive its very mild, falling into subclinical hypo possibly, still waiting on rt3.

I do have low vitamin d, so that could be playing some role too. I may do more mineral testing.

I just did rifabutin, mino, azith with monolaurin, oil of oregano, stevia, biocidin lsf...plus various other supplements

There is more data on rifampin on thyroid dysfunction than rifabutin. Some studies on the whole drug class.

Affecting the thyroid - but doesn’t turn it black like the mino.

Mino also stains the teeth - so not surprising it does thyroid - and I think I also read it can affect bones?
With the teeth - I read it’s under the surface so doesn’t clean off.
It does fade with time tho.

yeah, mino can affect pigmentation, like teeth, tongue, thyroid. some people claim Vitamin C helps prevent staining in teeth. i have been taking Livon Vitamin C the whole while, i dont really have staining, so its not clear if that helped or not, it might have.

I have wondered if you do get staining on the teeth, does that mean you could get or develop something like black thyroid. i guess its hard to tell.

regarding the discolouration of teeth I can tell you that indeed minocycline provokes it. Months ago I was quite terrified because in spite of good care of my teeth they were more and more brown. I was ABSOLUTELY relieved when I went to the dentist to make a teeth cleaning and, magic!, it worked. I came out with white and bright "new" teeth. Yet, after a couple of months (still with mino) I realised I was again down the same road. So after 4-5 months I went again and, again, came out with white teeth. Now I will have to do the same thing again... :-(
Hopefully I can get off abx in a few weeks (will see then how can I do without... but this is another story).

Take away: yes, minocycline stains your teeth but, good news, this is not permanent at all!!!

Yes, I know about mino staining the teeth. I posted about the thyroid a few years ago as well.
But, it's generally a grey/blackish color. I didn't know it could stain them brown though.

Mine didn't come off with cleaning...it was under the top surface.... you're fortunate that the staining came off with dental cleaning..

Hi folks,

well, this morning I went for a blood work and I have already the results. I had to check my TSH, FT4 and TPO antibodies. 15 days ago and because TSH was above limits 8.1 (upper limit 4,94) and suspecting that minocycline could be the culprit I decided to stop it. That was the only abx I was taking after 15 months of different combos. To not be without I switched mino by amoxicillin. Results: mixed feelings. You will see:

TPO was fine. That is very important, I do not have an autoimmune hypothyroidism.
TSH was down to 7,06 from 8,1. This is good but, honestly, I expected (wanted) a more noticeable decrease. Anyhow, I would tend to say that there is a correlation between mino intake and high TSH levels.
FT4 was above lower limit with 0,87 (limits 0,70 - 1,48).

So, I will have to repeat lab work in 1 month approximately to confirm that TSH is normalising (being off minocycline for all this time).

Takeaway: If you have been taking minocycline for a number of months do check you thyroids function. Please.

I will keep you updated.

By the way, very few is published linking this possible cause-effect...

It hasn't affected my thyroid numbers. They're still good.

going from 8.1 to 7.06 - that one test doesn't really mean there's a correlation.

What was your FT4 prior to going off the mino?

It will be interesting to see if your TSH continues to drop though while off mino.

correct, I am not saying there is a correlation yet, just saying that I am inclined to see correlation (because I want it to be). Need more data, for sure.

I did another test 4 days after quitting mino, and I had 6.4 (down from 8.1). But that was performed in another laboratory, so not directly comparable.

Regarding FT4, I don't have data immediately before going off mino. But all my previous labs (from 3 months earlier to 15 months earlier) all of them were around the actual value of 0,87.

Hi all,

Ok, two months have elapsed since I suddenly dropped minocycline because my TSH went up to 8,01.

15 days after dropping it, my TSH was down at 7,06. Was that difference an error of the measurement or was really significant?

Today, after 2 months without mino, my TSH is 4,56 back to the normal range!!!

Well, not to publish a scientific paper, but now, I am convinced that mino was the culprit of my increase of TSH.

Take away: who ever taking minocycline, please follow carefully your thyroids function!

My LLMD had no idea of this (even though there are reported cases in the literature of nasty interaction of mino with thyroids gland producing discolouration...). It sucks...

Glad I am back to normal!!

I’ve taken minocycline a lot for my treatment.

I tested my thyroid soon after going to the J clinic (it was still low) plus several times prior during the past few years.


I have always had a very low TSH - I think I’ll look at the results again and see if there was even a small rise in it.

What will you be taking instead of mino?

Hi Girlie,

yes, have a look. Of course, everybody reacts differently to abx. In my case I tolerated them extremely well, but in this case I had a rise of TSH. But good to keep an eye on it.

When I dropped mino I switched to amoxicillin for 15 days and then my doctor told me to stop all abx because the labs were fine and the symptoms well under control. It's been 1.5 months now without abx (but with a number of herbs) and so far, so good. So, I keep fingers crossed!
