Hello good folks of the forum,
I'm trying to figure out if my pain originates in the adrenal glands or the kidneys, and what's causing it.
For a few weeks, I have had mild kidney-area pain, about three inches from either side of my spine at the bottom of my ribcage. Occasionally it worsens for an hour or so but then eases, so I have been ignoring it. (There's always some other symptom to focus on, right?) I gradually have been working on re-conditioning my body after months of bed rest, and I have no urinary tract symptoms, so I was hoping the pain was muscular in nature, but it does not respond to changes in position or stretching or massage. Pressing on the area feels sickening and like a bruise. I had been detoxing from a bad (month-long) herx, so hoped the kidney pain would ease as the herx did.
Having felt slightly better the past couple of weeks, I have re-introduced a lot of supplements - all at very low doses, but I'm very sensitive. At what point can that overload the kidneys? I don't seem to be herxing anew from anything yet. Are there specific supplements that might cause more kidney burden and pain than others? I drink 3 L of water per day and a glass of unsweetened cranberry juice every morning, but don't do much to support my kidneys directly, since I never knowingly have had issues with my kidneys - no infections or UTIs, no stones, no issues with kidney function according to basic metabolic testing or urine dipstick testing. I have not been more sluggish than usual, in fact oddly the opposite.
Some of the supplements I take (more recently) are to restore adrenal function. Since the adrenal glands sit atop the kidneys, my acupuncturist tells me this could cause kidney pain - either from the adrenal glands being stressed and depleted, or from the adrenal glands essentially "waking up" after a period of under-performance. Is there a way to tell if the pain is adrenal? Has anyone else experienced it as a good sign, i.e. the adrenal system working better? Or is it more likely bad, like they're telling me "slow down or you'll crash"? (For adrenal restoration, I'm on ashwagandha, an adrenal glandular supplement, deglycerized licorice, vitex, and chamomile.)
Please talk to me about kidney-area pain. What is it most likely to be, and how should I interpret it, and what to do about it....
