Smart Meters: Have One? Any Problems?

The utility company that provides my electricity is planning to replace my analog meter with a smart meter.

Like most things, there is an ongoing debate about whether or not smart meters are safe. There are "experts" on both sides of the argument, as well as laypersons like myself. So, I have no idea who is correct.

Are there any folks reading this that have a smart meter installed?

If so...

* How long has it been in operation?
* How far is the smart meter from you and/or your family members?
* Have you noticed any negative health changes that you can definitively attribute to the smart meter?

I can choose to opt-out of the smart meter installation, by paying an expensive, one-time fee and an extra monthly charge to send a worker to read the analog meter. If I cancel the service before a certain period of time, I'll also be assessed an extra monetary penalty.

Obviously, the utility providers want smart meters installed, so they are making it difficult and expensive to opt-out.

My thanks for any feedback folks choose to share.

I was just discussing this subject with a lady in my city who was recently diagnosed with lyme.

Our city changed to smart meters in late 2012 or early 2013.
We did not jump “on board” right away

I got my first symptoms in spring 2013

We finally agreed to have it installed sometime after that - maybe end of 2013 or early 2014

Ours is on the outside wall of our garage...

It’s about 15-20 feet (guessing) from our family room (lower floor)
Our bedroom is on the 2nd floor right above the family room.

Every other room is further away except one spare bedroom upstairs.
We have our exercise equipment in that room (so hardly in there... lol) and my ironing board (that I almost never use) -

I don’t think it’s affected us - but not sure - how would one know - I have made lots of improvements with my treatment ... but who knows if the few remaining aren’t from the EMF’s??

Ours is on the other side of the house. I don't really buy that it does anything. It's on the same level as EMFs from phones and wi-fi...which we have a lot more exposure to. I don't worry about it personally

I don't have the answers to your specific questions, as I opted out of my smart meter as well. But I have recently become EMF sensitive (WiFi, Bluetooth, Cellular), and I 100% believe that smart meter radiation impacts people. I have learned a lot, very quickly, on EMFs and its dangers, and I would definitely opt out if it's an option.

I could opt-out, given the aforementioned financial considerations. However...

* I'm currently unemployed
* I'm in an apartment, so everyone would need to opt-out, as would surrounding homes
* I'm also surrounded by numerous Wi-Fi hotspots
* 5G cellular has already started coming online, too

You mentioned you learned a lot about the dangers of EMFs. Feel free to share any links to educational material you reviewed, as I may not have seen them. I'm looking for credible, science-based information.

I am in Australia. I have been unable to have the smart meter removed. You can opt out here but at the time it was installed I wasn't aware of the dangers.
Cannot walk within 10 feet of it without getting a headache that lasts for days. I have to turn all the electricity off in the house to walk past it to put the bins out.
I think the smart meter is of no benefit to me, I would pay to have it removed. But even that cant be done.

Opting out might not do much while living in an apartment. I'm part of a Facebook group, called EMF Warriors, which has a lot of good information (but you do have to sort through some of the sensationalism). A book called The Non-Tinfoil Guide To EMFs by Nick Pineault is also very good.

You could potentially block the radiation inside your apartment, and / or shield your sleeping area, so you are at least not being exposed then.

I'm also not so sure about surrounding homes needing to opt out. My neighbors (in houses) on either side of me have their smart meters, and my radio frequency meter doesn't read very high...I think I get readings from their WiFi more than their smart meters, which is another good point. Smart meters emit radio frequencies (902 MHz and 2.4 GHz). WiFi and bluetooth also emit 2.4 GHz, so you could offset some of the smart meter radiation by hard wiring your internet.

In my case, there was a burden. Now that we've hard wired our home, I don't use bluetooth and keep my cellular use to a minimum, I've found I can better tolerate EMFs in places where I can't control them. So, lowering your burden as much as possible is a beneficial thing.

Jasperilla: I appreciate the name of the book you mentioned. Searching the title, I found NonTinfoilEMF.com. At the bottom of the page, there are a list of references I plan to scan, over the coming days. Hopefully, there will be some resources I've not yet seen.

At present, I don't think opting-out will be worth the investment. If it were my only exposure, perhaps I could make a case for doing so. But, with multiple smart meters on the building, overlapping Wi-Fi broadcasts, cell towers, cell phones, cordless phones, microwave ovens, television and radio signals, and who-knows-what-else, there are too many possible insults to try to manage. And, that's just at home.

So, perhaps some sort of blocking devices/technologies might be a better use of the money that would have otherwise gone to the electric utility for the opt-out fee and extra monthly charge.
