Hey, Lapis_29:
Do you still use the "SacredBiotics Essential Eight" at all? I learned about it from you. I've never used it, but I save a lot of information you share (especially supplements), in case I might need it one day.
I notice the "21st Century Acidophilus Probiotic Blend Capsules" have total of 1 billion CFU across four strains, whereas most of probiotics I see are in the range of around 10-50 billion CFUs, give or take. On the low end, 1 billion...on the high end, 900 billion. I've seen some probiotics with up to 32 strains.
With regard to our guts, I keep seeing the figure that we have around 1 trillion bacteria making their home in us.
So, 1 billion CFUs of a probiotic vs. 100 trillion gut bacteria. Unless my math is incorrect, that means the probiotic is 0.00001 (or, 0.001%) of the total gut microbiota. Yet, you clearly see a benefit. I guess that shows that 1 billion of the correct strains is better than 50 billion of ineffective strains.
Have your benefits been significant? Or, perhaps more just keeping things steady?
Just last night, I heard an interview with a Integrative/Functional Medicine practitioner, discussing the topic of gut health. In his clinic, for the patients he recommends take probiotics, he *starts* them at 100 billion CFU and can go much higher.
Like most things in life, there's advice and experiences all over the map. But, you do a lot of thoughtful investigation and experimentation, so I value your perspective.
Wishing you well, sir.
His Dudeness
I am doing heavy metal detox and sometimes my gut gets so backed up the only solution is to down probiotics by the handful. The sacredbiotics is a great product, but too dang expensive to take in large amounts.
I don't really trust the CFU ratings. Afterall they could put any number on that bottle they want to, how the heck would we know? Plus if the bottle has been sitting in a wearhouse somewhere for 6 months the active bacteria slowly die. So maybe at one time is had X CFU but not anymore.
the only thing I look at is does the product actually help my gut in noticable ways or not?
