Ranitidine - anyone?

My regular (not lyme) Doc gave me a prescription for it 150 mg - take 2X daily.

I wake up in the morning with phlegm in my throat...not as bad as it used to be though. She said to try this...thinking the phlegm may be from reflux.

I don't always feel reflux during the day/evening...just now and then.

Any reason not to take it? Will it be difficult to discontinue it?

Is it good for MCAS? maybe it will help with that if I have it.

Hey girlie- I was on ranitidine for a while. I dont remember it doing much of anything for me. I think my doctor put me on it due to skin issues I was having and thinking it was MCAS but I didnt notice a difference so I discontinued taking it. On the other hand it didn't have any negative effect.

I'll try it for 3 or 4 days...see if it does anything positive.
Otherwise...it's going into the medication graveyard.....with the Gabapentin, Lyrica, Bactrim, etc.

It reduces the amount of acid your stomach produces. So, how's your digestion?

It is an H2 blocker. Zantac is the brand name. It should help with MCAS, but maybe consider coupling with an H1 blocker like claritin to really get an effect. The JSC has me on both + singular and quercetin + bromelin.

Dude - As far as I know my digestion is good.

Sheekster - what prompted Dr J to prescribe those for you?

Are there any side effects... any reason not to take the Zantac?
Any downside?

I can get Claritin from the pharmacy without a script right?

I have taken Quercetin - it seemed to be helping but I got a random bruise on my toe (never bumped it) and I thought it was from the Quercetin.
I will try it again.

What are H2 and H1 blockers?
Does the H stand for histamine?

Edit - Never mind - I googled what H1 and H2 are.

What happens when I stop taking them... do I get rebound reflux worse than before?

Girlie,

I took Nexium (PPI) and Zantac (H2 blocker) at high dose for 6 months in 2015 for what was suspected to be silent reflux (sounds like what you are suggesting).

The combination definitely helped mucus that I was drowning in. It also mysteriously stopped the red, burning heat I had in my face that I had for a good part of the prior 6 years of Lyme symptoms.

I knew the drugs (especially Nexium) were bad, so after 6 months I weaned myself off. I definitely had some backlash coming off the Nexium. I weaned off that first and stayed on Zantac for weeks longer, thinking that the Zantac was likely to be what stopped the red, burning face since it was an antihistamine.

Much to my surprise, that symptom slightly returned after dropping the Nexium. Thankfully it never returned to what it had previously been. I didn’t feel like the Zantac alone was doing that much, so I came off it while transitioning briefly to apple cider vinegar and then betaine hydrochloride.

Taking Zantac for a short time to see if it helps shouldn’t hurt anything.

So what could cause the phlegm in the back of my throat - if not reflux?
My sinuses don’t seem to be congested...

I’ll try it for 3-4 days - if no improvement then I’ll stop

Yes, I did a few years ago - I don’t know why I stopped

Hi Girlie. Yes claritin is available with no prescription. It is pretty cheap if you don't get the brand name. Kim F at the JSC prescribed ketotifen, singular, DAO, and quercetin / bromelin at the first appointment since I told her I had MCAS. My MCAS presents as food sensitivities and sensitivities to moldy buildings.

Singular is a leukotriene inhibitor. I think leukotrienes are another compound secreted by allergy cells in the body that can contribute to MCAS / allergy symptoms.

At the second appointment she added claritin and zantac to the things above in order to continue to beat down the histamine production. It helps with symptoms, but so far I don't think my sensitivities have decreased yet.

I have read a few downsides about anti histamines, but they seem to be pretty common practice with the integrative doctors. I haven't heard of any alarming downsides, so if you find anything please let me know.

Jarrow brand is the best for the $ out of the 3 or 4 choices. Its in 1000mg softgells, 60 for $10.

One at bedtime for a week or so, then taper off to every other night - seeing how you feel.

I dont need them much at all now, but since there also anti candida, I keep a bottle on hand.

Nah - not really - I don’t get the same one every time.
In fact I got a real ***** the last time I had to fill a script (non lyme meds)
I handed her the prescription to fill and when I got home - she had filled only one month of a six month script. The dispensing fee was $10.
I called and asked why she didn’t fill the entire script and she said because I didn’t ask her to...
seriously - if I get a script filled and say nothing - I’d assume the person wants the full amount!!!
I wouldn’t guess and fill 1/6 of it.
Then she laughed and said something like “You can have as many as you want” and laughed again.

The next day I went in to pick up the rest and told them I wasn’t going to pay a dispensing fee and also asked to speak to the owner and told him how she only filled a fraction of my script and how unprofessional she was about it when I called. He apologized on her behalf.
