Hello all,

I was wondering if I can get some help. I recently adopted a dog and he’s been having bad kennel cough from the shelter I got him at. I took him to the vet and they said it’s kennel cough and gave him some doxy. Well this morning when I took him out I noticed a bump on his back. Felt it and saw it was a tick. I quickly got tweezers and pulled it off. I checked him for others and only found one more and removed it with the tweezers. I have diagnosed bartonella myself and it’s hell. From severe anxiety to chronic head pain and depersonalization it’s awful. Obviously this concerns me and I’m going to have him tested for tbi this week, however I’m concerned for my already infected self and him. He hasn’t bitten me or anything at all. I do have to open his mouth to give him the doxy and his saliva gets on me. My question is since I initially touched the tick and I have had his saliva on my hands can I have already gotten another tbi? I’m still only feeling just my usual symptoms so obviously I’m working myself up here, but I’m sure as you all know these infections are beyond awful. I’m hoping he has no infection and that it is only kennel cough that will clear up soon.

I highly doubt you’d get a reiinfection from touching his saliva or the tick.

Plus - not all ticks carry lyme and co’S - your dog may not even have it... but good on you for treating your dog anyway!!

Send the tick to Igenex for testing - if you still have it.

Are you sure it was a deer tick? The deer ticks seem to avoid our dogs. Dog ticks on the other hand would find them. I think most usually just gave up trying to get through the thick fur.

Dog ticks and Lonestar can still transmit many TBI's including borrelia. Maybe not B31 borrelia but, please do not perpetuate the myth that "Oh it's not a deer tick, it's okay"

Whatever got me was probably either dog tick or lonestar tick because that is all I usually see in my neighborhood.

To add on to what Missouri wrote - it’s suspected that other insects can transmit lyme - ie fleas, mosquitos - so don’t rule out lyme bcuz of type of tick

I've pulled close to 50 ticks rooted on my dog. All dog ticks except for 2. Every year at the vet she tested negative. I don't consider it a myth. You can get HIV from mosquitoes too has it ever happened. TBI are not everywhere.

"Oh, it's not a deer tick, it's okay, whew"... that is a myth

The chances might be lower for other species of tick, but I don't even know if that can be stated definitively. I just don't think it's wise for anyone to let their guard down for any tick bite. Especially if signs and symptoms manifest. I am not saying all tick bites always transmit infections.

Glad your dog is healthy.

Unfortunately I have pulled many ticks off my kids also. I hope they stay healthy too. So far I have been lucky with them. Before I knew anything about TBI's I used to use my fingers to squeeze and pull off the ticks because I believed the IDSA's attitude of "there aren't many deer ticks in the south, so ticks are safe here".

That attitude the CDC promotes of ignoring Dog, Dermacentor, and Lonestar tick bites cost me several years of suffering.

They certainly are I guess we can agree on that. The prevalence varies greatly by area though. I'm not a believer that just cause its a tick (regardless of species) it could carry borrelia. You don't think dog ticks get tested when people submit them to labs? Do they throw out all the dog ticks when they do samplings? They test them for RMSF. The conspiracy only goes so far if it does exist. Should I be taking antibiotics for a mosquito bite every time I am bitten? If dog ticks carried borreli Im pretty sure every dog in the northeast around me would have borrelia. They dont.

Its college students probably doing the testing in labs for universities where you can send you tick. Im sure they are eager to hop on the conspiracy bandwagon on suppressing tick information.

I did not say anything about conspiracies. I do not claim to know why the IDSA does what it does.

I prefer facts and evidence over conjecture.

I believe science is the bet path to get us to accurate models of reality.

You might be surprised if you look a little bit closer at the science. Like this fairly recent study of tick borne infection prevalence across the US.

They are looking for Borrelia Burgdoferi and Borrelia Miyamotoi only right?

Just do your own googling borrelia mayonii, lonstari, andersoni, bissettii, parkeri. You may be surprised to see all the recent research and how much uncertainty remains.

And all that is cursory science without really digging in to the "relapsing fever" borrelias or rickettsia's that I hear may be pulling the interest of tick borne disease researchers lately....

Instead of conspiracy- sounds more like confusion, uncertainty, and hubris to me. Typical human behavior right. do you agree?

No you should not take antibiotics for every tick/mosquito bite. You should watch for signs and symptoms and act accordingly. No matter what species of tick/insect bites you in any region of the country.
