Around mid august I started having severe anxiety, panic attacks, and intrusive thoughts. This lasted for about a month until I went to see a therapist, and she oddly enough suggest I get tested for lyme. Turned out she was right, I did have lyme disease. I was put on doxycycline for two weeks during those two weeks the anxiety and intrusive thoughts were still there, but much better. A few days off of the antibiotic I started having bad anxiety again, severe joint pain almost like a stabbing sensation, blurry like vision and what I think is derealization. I went to the emergency room because my primary couldnt get me in and the pain was so bad. They prescribed me another two weeks of doxycycline and took more blood work to test me for lyme again, but I’m assuming it came back negative since I never got a call back. Is this all normal? What steps should I take next?

Hi freespirit - welcome !

I recommend you find a LLMD (lyme Literate dr) to guide you.
You should do this ASAP - since your infection is fairly recent - best to get back on treatment and not allow it to get worse.

You can start a new thread:” Looking for LLMD in/near____” and fill in the blank with your city and state.
Then enable your email through “my Profile”

Members can send you names privately. We don’t post the names of llmd’s (unless they’re already well known ) because they can be subjected to investigation for treating Lyme disease for more than a couple of weeks.

My lyme screen lgG test came back A positive and so did my lyme interp lgG, but the Lyme screen lgM came back negative. Im unsure what any of this means though. Thank you for your help, I’m going to look into that!

Lyme can cause neuroencepholapathy. I had fibromyalgia, headaches, anxiety, depression, mood swings, memory issues etc for 5y. Had no idea it was caused by Lyme. I started to develop neuropathy in April of this year, thats when we realized it was Lyme.

I met with Dr Amiram Katz. in CT, one of the smartest guys I've ever met, testified in front of Senate on Lyme. His belief is that lyme can cause neuroencephlapthy which causes these issues. He runs a test called the Cunningham Panel, which will show antibodies against the brain. Mine was strongly positive. I did an MRI and it showed hippocampal and frontal lobe volume loss, in addition to some white matter lesions. This is common in Lyme infections, and confirmed the diagnosis.

He is putting me on low-dose penicillin. If you use high dose antibiotics for a CHRONIC infection, it comes back, because the lyme hides and them comes back out of hiding once you stop. He finds that low dose penicillin doesnt activate the lymes defenses, and works slowly over time. He says this is the best treatment for neuropsychiatric lyme.

The medication is called Bicillin LA. It’s a slow release intramuscular form of penicillin. He said that typically you start to see results in 5 weeks. I have 10 weeks supply and will go see him for a follow up then, not sure how long he plans to keep me on it after that.

I thought it was super interesting how he looked for the footprint of Lyme using secondary antibody testing instead of just a western blot, which can be very inaccurate. I came across some of these antibodies and MRI findings mentioned in Richard Horowitz’ Why Can’t I Get Better, so I’m very confident in the diagnosis.

From doing my own google searches it sounds like IV Rocephen and Bicillin both work very well for neuro Lyme, but w IV Rocephen you’re going to have the high dose antibiotic side effects and relapses.

He’s definitely worth the trip if you live in the North East. I heard about him from a colleague who has been to see EVERY Lyme guy around and said Katz was the most impressive.
