I dont like to brag about this, but I reached a cure while remaining a smoker the whole time. There was a point during my disease where the only real solice I felt I had was a walk with my dog and a cigarrette. Not a healthy stress coping mechanism at all, but it was one of mine for sure.
During the disease I probably smoked the heaviest for me which was about 10-12 per day. Not what I would really consider heavy.
The only positive 'health benefit' ever proven from tobacco use is that it can reduce your chances of parkinsons disease considerably. The nicotinomides in nicotine are actually an anti-convulsant. They can prevent seizures and are classified as nueroprotective. It would calm me down a bit when I felt tremors coming on.
But remember that all cigarettes are not created equal. I only smoke American Spirit Organic handroll tobacco. Thats all ive smoked for 10 years. And its not so much the tobacco, but the crap that all tobacco companies put into their PAPER.
Cigarette papers are LOADED with nasty chemicals and toxins. They put ammonia in there so the nicotine goes to your brain faster. Its a form of freebasing, that binds nicotine to ammonia and goes to the brain much faster, addicting people faster.
They also put burn accelorators in the paper. This is actually trace amounts of nitro-glycerin, the same ingredient in explosives.
Then, people started to see burn accelerators as a safety risk because people would fall asleep with a lit cigarette and cause a fire. So the Obama FDA passed a law in 2009 that all cigarettes made for use in the USA also must now include a burn retardant, which is literally hot glue. Its the same ingredients as carpet glue.
So they have ammonia, burn accelerators AND burn retardants in all packaged cigarettes, just to name a very few. And yes even the organic american spirit cigarettes that come in packs have all this same garbage in the paper.
You can visually see the difference if you hold a clean rolling paper next to a cigarette with the naked eye. If you take a further step and look at a processed cigarette under a blacklight next to a clean paper, you would be astonished at what you can see on the surface of a processed cig. Also the burn test is revealing too. Light a hemp or flax paper and see how it disintegrates to a fine clean white ash and blows away to nothing, and if you empty the tobacco and burn just the paper on a processed cig it will leave behind a large black clump. all that is going to your lungs.
So the key is rolling your own and using good quality clean papers made from 100% hemp or flax and nothing else. The handrolls have no filter, so they are strong, but I noticed a huge difference. On the rare occasion I would be out of tobacco, i might bum a cigarette from a stranger, and even with the filter, the taste was so disgusting to me I would almost vomit and it burned my throat. Even as a smoker, I cant tolerate the 2nd hand smoke smell from processed cigarettes. I cant even be around people who smoke them. There is a HUGE difference, and again, most of it comes down to the paper, not the tobacco itself. Another advantage of rollies over packaged cigarettes is that its hard to chainsmoke because it takes a couple minutes to actually roll a cigarette.
Of course I dont really want to pursuade anyone to smoke anything, especially with Lyme, but if you are going to smoke, I personally feel this is the way to do it.
Ultimately, even with its anticonvulsant properties, smoking will be a net negative for most. It definitely taxes your immune system, especially when your asking your body to fight all the chemicals they put in packaged cigarettes today, and you want your immune system strong as possible.
But to answer your question, yes, healing while smoking is possible, at least it was for me, I think with a few caveats. Thats just me being honest. Most every single LLMD will tell you its impossible, which is probably the best answer for most people, but I managed to beat Lyme without quitting smoking. In fact I still smoke, and am enjoying a handrolled organic american spirit with hemp paper as I type this. (dont try this at home kids, i'm not a ROLL model. Pun intended)
