I would recommend starting with what you suggested in your initial post, at very low doses, increasing very slowly. I am very wary to doing too much too soon, just based on my own levels of sensitivity.
Binders are a good idea as long as you keep having at least one full bowel movement per day. Make sure your diet is veggie-heavy and as unprocessed as possible. Plenty of water. Whichever vitamins, minerals, and other supplements (omega 3s, CBD, probiotics, etc.) you find helpful and supportive. All that good stuff.
For what it's worth, rhodiola made me feel intensely irritable for the one day I took it, at a one-drop dose. One drop of holy basil made me stay awake for two days straight. One drop of eleuthero made me sleep for 24 hours straight. My point here is that adaptogens can be intense and unpredictable! Those hers all have the opposite effects on lots of people. For me, ashwagandha is the sweet spot, and if one of the only herbs in the world that I tolerate at a full dose! But your mileage my vary, so start "low and slow."
And good luck! I hope the herbal approach is easier on your body and helps get you back to a good place. I also really like the rawlsmd.com website for advice from and integrative and pro-herbal perspective.
