Closing throat sensation/strangling feeling

I know this is a bizarre way of describing it, but for the last 4 months I have gone even more downhill then I already was. It started with all over itching. Legs, arms, back. Went to doctor as I had a rash by the crease of my leg and he said possibly contact dermatitis. Gave a cream which didn't do anything. Another doctor did testing and thought I had a fungal rash and gave me cream and eventually rash and itching went away.

I have now maybe 3 or 4 times come up in a red rash all over my face, which will last for about 30 minutes and then disappear. I would try and fall asleep and wake up gasping and my chest started to get tight. I started having symptoms I had never had before in the 6 years I have been sick. I went out and had a full on panic attack in my car, something I have never experienced before. I was hyperventilating and it was just a very scary experience.

I started to have what I can only describe as a throat closing sensation. It feels like something is restricting my throat and it is an awful feeling. Sometimes when I swallow my throat clicks, and it feels like I am being strangled or drowning. I also have a really sore itchy throat, itchy ears, itching inside nose, runny and stuffy nose, and the super tight chest.

I will easily run 99-100 degrees and my face will burn up so I can feel when my temp is increasing. I have tried allergy meds but it didn't put a dent in my symptoms. I have been tested three times for corona too and the antibody test was negative. I actually thought at first this was corona due to the chest stuff.

I have also had an increase in feeling wobbly, off balance, extreme nausea episodes, vibrating, tingling, and tight muscles.

Has anyone had anything similar? Please help. I am miserable and half the time I wonder if I should go to the ER and I just feel like I am going to be stuck with this awful throat feeling forever with no answers.

Good Morning; I would bother my doctor and demand further testing. I can't believe your doctor has not done further testing.I heard of someone who woke up like you with gasping and chest tightness and it was an esophagus issue in his throat. Could be guillian barr syndrome or anything! Were you tested for allergies? Did you actually take the allergy tests? This sounds serious with extreme nausea and wobbling and vibrating. Speaking strictly for me, I would go to the ER and I would see another doctor too.This is a good site to be I think also.

With those symptoms, I would highly suspect ongoing toxic mold exposure. Can you spend a week or two doing mold avoidance in a clean, outdoor environment?

Are you on antihistamines or have epi pen? It sounds like you are having severe allergic reactions - close to anaphylaxis. Lyme & co can cause MCAS (mast cell activation syndrome).

I will get throat tightening/lump in throat with certain foods & herbs. I couldn’t stand anything close to my neck (like a hooded sweatshirt or turtleneck). Once i stopped taking my herbal bend (green dragon core protocol) it went away. I was taking it for over 6 months with no issue so I never suspected it. I think it’s dandelion because I also get it with detox tea and Dr Rawls supplement. I also will get it (not as bad)if I eat a lot of eggs, bananas or sesame seeds. Allergy testing shows I am allergic.

What supps or meds are you taking? Have you tried taking a break to see if it helps?

I'd go see a rheumatologist. All sounds very autoimmune to me. Rashes on the face are common in sjogrens and lupus. Dysphagia (swallowing issues) is also a symptom, although rarer. The joint pain, tingling/nerve pain, anxiety, etc is all common in autoimmunity, i have them all.

This screams MCAS to me. Have you tried mast cell stabilizers? Cromolyn sodium and ketotifen are prescription mast cell stabilizers, and DAO and quercetin are natural options. If you are continually being exposed to a trigger, though....

(Echoing WBF's mold suggestion) If you are being exposed to mold, then it is a reaction to toxins (not an allergy). You will not feel better until you remove the source of exposure. Have your body or living space been tested for mycotoxins or mold growth?

Hi all,

Thanks for the responses. My CIRS doctor told me he thought my symptoms were normal and fitting with CIRS and it was highly unlikely I have lupus and CIRS, but I am not totally sold on that. Apparently vibrating is a very common symptom of CIRS.I am failing my VCS test yet my place tested low for mold when I tested it via mycometrics which is really confusing.I haven't tested allergies yet but I am thinking of doing that next and I had heard of MCAS which seems to fit, but my doctor basically said to treat the root cause and those issues would go away.

I’m curious about the Mycometrics test. Did you do an ERMI or HERTSMI-2? Where did you collect the dust?

I have done 7 of the tests on 6 different buildings, so I am always interested in other people’s test results and how they collected their samples.

Also, is there another building you spend a lot of time in besides your home? If so, did you test it, too?

With those symptoms, I would be very concerned about ongoing exposure, as that’s what it sounds like. Have you tried camping out at all? That would be a good test to see if your home is affecting you. You would need to not take anything from your house with you.

I did the one that tests more molds, and my score came out to a 4 which is considered real low. I collected from dust off of tvs, cabinets, tables, window ledges, and even wiped my ac vents. There has been something with my kitchen wall that has made me a bit suspect there could be a leak behind it, but I am not certain.

-Group I
-Group II
-HERTSMI-2 score

Did you calculate your HERTSMI-2 score from the ERMI results? Here’s the score card if you need it (https://www.mycometrics.com/hertsmi.html)

Yeah, the HERTSMI-2 result is a 4 and the 5 mold groups that are considered the most dangerous are low. Group 1 is 10.28 and group 2 is 10.06. I even asked in the mold group and a lot of people said this is so rare to have such a clean place. My apartment is new. 2018 build.

When I was living in my parents’ house - the one my mom and I had mold symptoms from - that house had a HERTSMI-2 of 10. We moved to a relative’s house, which had a HERTSMI-2 of 4 with a total of around 22 or 24 and a lot of Group II mold. I never did well with mold detox. My CIRS doc said that sensitive people often need to be in a place with an ERMI of negative 2 in order to not have symptoms.

Your results aren’t very bad, but I wouldn’t call it very low. I am surprised that the mold group thought those results indicated a really clean place. Most places are moldy, but if all the sources are found and adequately cleaned and whole house remediation-level cleaning is done, I believe most places could be very clean.

We did the whole enchilada. Source removal, manual cleaning, replaced drywall and insulation in areas that had mold or water damage, Aerosolver Pure fogging and wipedown for small particle removal following remediation, removed popcorn ceilings and all flooring, ceiling fans, blinds, and cabinets, replaced entire HVAC system including ducts and had a whole house air purifier and dehumidifier installed. Pretty much wiped out our life savings and we still have no cabinets, appliances or furniture. But it’s better than sleeping in my car, which is what I had been doing since last July.

I know mold is a big MCAS trigger, too. I developed MCAS symptoms last year after the relative’s got much moldier after a series of water events.

Are you seeing a CIRS doctor? I got laid off and have no funds currently and I don't know where to turn. All of this is so heartbreaking and I feel hopeless honestly. Doctors cost money I don't have.

I was on csm but I had this all before too. I stopped meds and it didn't help change my symptoms sad

Ok, well it’s good to rule that out. Bart and lyme are big mcas triggers (along with mold). Something is definitely triggering you.

Have you noticed it gets worse with certain foods?
