This statement in the article was a shocking and sobering revelation:
“It is now clear that alcoholics tolerate disulfiram much better than those of us with chronic Lyme. It seems that alcoholics’ detoxification capacities are in better shape than patients with chronic tick-borne infections, at least until alcoholics develop cirrhosis.”
yeah, i caught that too.
i think it's referring to the fact that alcoholics' bodies actually adapt to deal with the toxins so they are able to drink way more alcohol than the rest of us. ( before he became sober - my father used to drink 10-15 pints of beer, a bottle of sherry, and then start on the hard stuff!
then do the same the next day....) so their livers have adapted to detoxify better (for a time at least)
did you see in the history of disulfiram that at one point in the not too distant past the average life expectancy for a male in Russia was something like 50 years!!! due to alcohol consumption.
on the other hand, most with Lyme and co-infections will have impaired liver function. so one is a kind of super detoxifier and the other a poor detoxifier - I think that's the reason for a wide gap.
