LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Physicians know nothing about basic physics. They are the last ones to listen to about what a mask does or does not do. They simply repeat information, and its incorrect info on this subject.

Ive worked in physics , airflow and filtration labs testing and designing various applications/materials/scenarios from large to small particles, with patents in these areas as well ...and physics does not lie. As long as your on Earth the principle stays the same. I'd think most adults would be able to understand this at the basic level. A mask at its simplest form is a filter, not much different then your coffee or furnace filter in what it does. Even if things go through a filter the trajectory and velocity is changed from its natural pattern, which, with covid, is a good thing.

The effectiveness of out going particle capture and velocity and distance obviously depends the the mask type, material, and fit. The duck dynasty and or "hipster" beard will affect the mask seal a lot, thus it will leak.

So if you are in proximity to others this will help slow the spread / shorten distance of your breath ("or cough cloud") and particles/droplets ect to others nearby.

And caring about others should matter. Or do we not care anymore?

The other possible fact that covid might transmit via our eyes is an added cautionary, it does NOT cancel out the affect of a mask. Where done covid come from? > obviously your mouth and nasal passages.

The fact that some are STILL arguing about masks is ridiculous.

I agree - its not just about masks - but it’s part of it... along with social distancing, good hygiene, smaller circles (bubbles) ....

First you have to prove they're failing.. social distancing limits exposure, practically by definition. Are you thinking everyone has been exposed in those elderly care centers regardless of preventative protocols? Whatever situation your looking at, I'm sure it could be far worse.

That NBC article was heartbreaking. Was there something you wanted to suggest that could be "done better to protect our vulnerable population"?

Edit: Article mentioned an independent federal commission that recommended "expanding in-person visitation at long-term care facilities". I had trouble linking to the report from the article and couldn't find it with a quick search...

How is everyone doing?

We are having higher numbers again after bending the curve in the late spring.
Not so bad in my location but the mainland is surging.

I work in a long term care home and so far no cases... yet.
Because it hasn’t been bad in my location - I find people are quite lax - not good!!!

Lymie - If this uptick continues, I think our hospitals here are going to shut down the non essential surgeries again....
sigh

We are not doing great in Sweden. It's increasing every week and we have more people in the hospital now in our city than we had at the peak in May. ICU is at capacity in Stockholm and soon here.

We are going away for a few days for Christmas on Sunday and on Christmas Eve it will be 5 other people than us. One of them works at a hospital and take public transport. And as it's Sweden, none of them wear masks. Not sure what we are going to do. So tired of not meeting others and it would be great to spend a few days at a house instead of our apartment.

What your saying is that because there is any chance the mask helps, we should wear them forever. Every winter for the flu. Sounds like a great life to me.

And where does it end? What are the thresholds and who decides?

I had gastritis last year likely cause by a fecal borne bacteria (coxsackie a9.) Shall we make gloves mandatory for every one? Regulate hand and forced butt washing in toilets?

To fight global warming and save lives should we stop heating our homes, turn off the AC and eat insects to save the planet. Forget TV and movies, do you know what that stuff costs the environment with every explosion. Forget about travel unless you're the elite.

Its utter insanity and if you cannot see it......

I get it. Everyone has to decide what level of risk is suitable for themselves. If I was 70 plus or high risk I would certainly be taking more precautions since Covid almost seems as if it was designed to kill older people.

My sister has 6 staff in her work group who all working from home, are all low risk, 5 are under 50, but all 6 are so terrified that won't go out or even to the grocery store. That's not even a remotely reasonable fear.

The Lyme has jacked up my allergic reaction to mosquito bites so much that I put off getting into beekeeping because it's prudent with a likely higher risk of some kind of anaphylaxis. Again reasonable precaution that doesn't ruin my life or others live.

Just imagine how this would be if there were big concerts and packed sports stadiums. The hospital would be overrun and the death rate would climb a lot.

You can't prove it one way or the other because you can't even ask questions, you just have to obey. California and Florida have the same excess death rate verses 2019 even though FL is packed with seniors from sea to shining gulf and not locked down. If we lived in normal world we'd say "hey, what's the correlation? What's one doing or not doing that the other isn't?" But our world has gone so insane from fear and we just hide in our homes begging to be saved by the government and corporations. Insanity.
