You mentioned having this procedure done a little more than a year ago on your shoulder.

How is it today?

Upon goggling, this "needle aspiration" goes by several different names, seems to be different variations with the same result.

Ok Astroman, so here is my story -

My shoulder got so bad I couldn't work. I am a pharmacist and I couldn't type or open medicine bottles because I was in so much pain. I tried the non surgical route and did PT and stuff with absolutely no success.

I did not know that needle guided aspiration was even an option, or I would have had it done in the beginning.

I went in for the procedure, and it was PAINFUL. Imagine having about 15 shots (vaccinations) into your arm. They put lidocaine on the area to numb it and then pretty much jabbed my shoulder with a long needle about 15 times. I was in agony, but it was short lived. They did not get all of the calcification out, but a good chunk of it. I could not believe how much was cleared, yet I also could not believe that they didn't get it all. There is a small amount of calcification left. So after that, they then injected me with Betamethasone (similar to the common cortisone shot people are familiar with).

My arm was sore for a few days, and then I went in for PT. They were giving me different exercises to do and put a Tens unit on my shoulder as well. I only went there maybe 4 times. Why? Because the 4th time they put a Tens unit on me they put it on too strongly and my whole arm went numb. I freaked out and never went back LOL. My arm was fine, but I just didn't trust them.

Time passed, I bought a Tens unit myself and used it for a while. I did some stretching exercises and such. I had the procedure done in January of 2020 and by May of 2020 my shoulder was 100% fine. Even now, many months later, my shoulder is still awesome. Is it possible it will flare up again, maybe. But I am trying to stay positive!

No current confirmed case, no current x-rays. Ortho Drs in my past visually concentrated more on my joints vs tendons when looking at my x-rays.

Even though my tendons were tight, stiff and "ropey" for years, most of my joint noises, clicking and grinding are gone. Im way better from various clinical and home treatments but still not 100%. Whats remaining is hard to fix.

First step, I need up to date x-rays and a Dr who knows what calcification looks like.

Yes, well a current Xray would definitely steer you in the right direction!
calcification is so easy to see. Just look on the internet, most cases are classic and look the same.

Is that the medical diagnostic term - calcific tendonitis? It’s diagnosed with an xray?

I have had increasing shoulder pain and limited mobility for at least a year and a half. Had xrays done by my primary doc in April 2020. All he said was no signs of arthritis. Finally went to PT yesterday. Will see if I get any improvement.

Would a regular doctor know how to see this on xrays, or would it need to be seen by a specialist for diagnosis? If so, what kind of specialist?

I still have pain around my left shoulder blade area...

As WBF asked - would a “reg” doc be able to identify it?

From image examples I saw in the past, sometimes its a big chunk, then its easy to see.

If its all within the tendon, I would assume it could look like a "ill or half dead " tendon.
