Mitochondria power our cells, when they aren't functioning well, the immune system suffers. They have the ability to renew themselves through processes termed mitochondrial dynamics, but this renewal can be impaired by disease and stress. There is a supplement protocol in development to jumpstart dynamics, improving function even in cases where mitochondria have been seriously damaged by fluoroquinolone antibiotics.
There are no doctors using this protocol, it was posted to a
longevity forum by a user named Turnbuckle, and is being refined with feedback from others. I've done one cycle and was impressed enough that I wanted to share it, the brief benefits I felt were easily the best improvement in my health since antibiotics.
I had a minor herx, which itself is impressive given that none of the supplements are antimicrobial, what followed was a tantalizing mental clarity that I hadn't felt in years. That said, I've seen other protocols over the years which had glowing reviews, yet I found no benefit from them. This might be what works for me, and not you, and there's always the potential for harm when experimenting with untested treatments.
With that disclaimer out of the way, here is an outline of the protocol. Please report back to this thread if your doctor thinks it is safe to try, and let us know if you felt any improvement.
Mitochondria renew themselves through fission and fusion, those are the two aspects of dynamics which the protocol seeks to promote.
Those with fluoroquinolone toxicity can have serious reactions, if you've taken these antibiotics at any point, use the absolute minimum doses, and don't repeat a second cycle for up to two weeks before judging your response.
Fission
- 100 mg - 2 g nicotinamide ●
- 500 mg - 5 g d-ribose ●
- 1-4 g lysine
Fusion
- 5-10 g stearic acid ●
- 2-4 g ascorbic acid
- 20-40 mg PQQ ●
- 30-60 mg sulforaphane glucosinolate ●
- 1-5 g leucine
Starred items are most important. You will find nicotinamide available as nicotinamide riboside, floxies report doing better with this more expensive form. Whichever you choose, make sure that it is not niacinamide, a related compound that does not have the desired effect.
Day 1: take fission supplements, do not take antioxidants such as CoQ10, vitamin E or C
Day 2-3: take fusion supplements
Day 4-7: resume your usual supplement protocol
This is a rough outline, there are many variations. Healthy people are starting with 1 g of nicotinamide, this is considered the minimum dose for them, in my case I used 600 mg and found it potent enough. For floxies, 100 mg might be too much.
