Garzie, so she injected into the muscle around the vagus nerve which apparently calms down the muslce and
opens up the vagus nerve. I believe that calming the vagus nerve shuts down inflammation, but i was skeptical because it seemed like a second order effect (calm the muscle to calm the nerve), but it really worked.
I read Dr Katinka's Van Der Mewe's book "Putting out the Fire", she runs the Spero clinic, and she referenced a study done by a neurosurgeon in nyc recently where he cut the vagus nerve of a rat and showed how systemic inflammation went wild (cytokines up, ESR sed rate all those markers), then re-attached it and showed how it calmed down. There is some evidence that the vagus nerve controls this innate immune system neuro-inflammation.
I had posted about
some of this stuff a few months ago when I decided to go to the Spero clinic. But basically the way I see it is you have a bunch of diseases that we can say are autoimmune. Myestenia Gravis, MS, RA, etc. In all of these diseases, the humoral immune system goes nuts. Either you have an autoreactive B or T cell w/ memory that mistakenly targets the host tissue.
What gets less play and recognition is the innate immune system, the part w/o memory. This is where macrophages and toll like receptors come in. But also, glial cells. I studied a ton of different diseases. MDD, parkinsons, CRPS. They all have this localized glial cell induced inflammation at play. So basically what happens is that after too many stressful insults, be it chronic emotional stress, toxins, infections, etc, the glial cells freak out. The schwann cells in the nerves are glial cells as well. And it becomes very hard to calm them down. They go from M2 (anti-inflammatory) to M1 (inflammatory), and you get all this local neuroinflammation, which sometimes gets call neuro-degeneration.
For whatever reason, and I dont quite understand it, but this is inextricabtly linked to the autonomic nervous system. You almost always see ANS involvement in these diseases. And its probably why you see super stressed people develop chronic disease. Or why traumatic events can trigger inflammatory conditions. And after reading Putting Out the Fire, and reading that study about
the rats and the vagus nerve, that was the link i needed to prove that the ANS stress is what drives it. Once I saw that I knew I had to try going to the Spero Clinic and see if they can rewire my ANS.
So Dr Rahav was basically saying all of this in different words. She was like wow i see someone has done his homework! She gave me a big presentation to go through, i want to see exactly her take and how she explains it.
But breaking that loop is freaking hard. She seems to know how to do it, but again she's very booked up, i imagine i will mostly have to do it myself which i've been unable to do on my own w/o cool modalities like hers. I'm hoping Spero Clinic can help do this.
Blakeleysmom, she's an MD who also embraces eastern/alternative/functional medicine. She studied under klinghardt, knows acupuncture, does all the functional medicine metals stuff etc, traditional allopathic medicine, etc. But not kooky, grounded in science...she seemed like she was picking small bits from each that she found works and combining them in smart ways, versus just throwing stuff against the wall. She basically she said she eats, breathes and sleeps this stuff. We had a big discussion about
how western drs have basically shirked their responsiblity to big pharma, and how bleak it is in medicine, and how she's trying to do her own research and change that. Very sharp lady.
