astroman - I never knew that before. When you mention "low total proteins," do you mean protein count in comp panel? This is interesting.
Yes, total protein count in the comp panel consist of two types of protiens; albumin (what body builders need, linked to amino acids) and globulin (immunoglobulins and other types) in your body.
1)Albumin is a type of protein found in large amounts in the blood. Because it is a small molecule in size, it is one of the first proteins able to pass through the kidneys into the urine when there are kidney problems. This presence of small amounts of albumin in the urine is the condition called micro-albuminuria. (My kidney BUN is always a little high, but Albumin urine is thankfully normal (zero)).
Albumin is a protein made by the liver and its main role is to maintain the osmotic pressure of the blood compartment, provide nourishment of the tissues (body builder stuff), and transport hormones, vitamins, drugs, and other substances such as calcium throughout the body
2)Three types of globulin have been identified—subclasses are alpha, beta, and gamma. Alpha and beta globulins are transport proteins, serve as substrates upon which other substances are formed, and perform other diverse functions. Gamma globulins have a vital role in natural and acquired immunity to infection (immunoglobulins).
