Difficulty Finding (And Affording) Alinia (Nitazoxanide)

I've started working with a new LLMD (an ACTUAL MD, now), Dr. S., at a Holistic Medicine clinic in South Carolina. And finally feel like I'm starting to make some headway. He's been ordering the right tests, etc. (which my last Lyme Practitioner was reluctant to do, because of not being an MD--and Medicare would most likely not cover any GOOD lab testing). Bloody shame, and of course the typical Lyme tests at LabCorp are relatively worthless, especially with Chronic, or long-term Lyme. So I spent 2 years on antibiotics, not really getting better and not sure of what the hell we were actually treating me for.

So, last month's IGeneX testing shows 3 out of 5 strains, positive, for Bartonella. This new MD I'm using has me on Azithromycin, Alinia, Low-dose Naltrexone, and Cryptolepis tincture. Along with Skullcap tincture & Quercetin that we use for minimizing the occasional Herxing.

The Alinia (500mg, twice a day) is proving unaffordable for me--it's a "Tier 5" Specialty medication, manufactured by Romark. The mail-order pharmacy (CarePoint) that many of my Lyme doc's patients use won't help me in keeping the copay low, because I've got a Medicare Advantage plan insurance, and not commercial insurance (like what's available if you're working for a GOOD, BIG employer). And the so-called "Patient Savings plan" that Romark brags about on their website is run through this CarePoint (mail-order) Pharmacy. ABSOLUTELY USELESS ROMARK "PATIENT SAVINGS PLAN," in my case.

$418. dollars for the brand-name (for a month's supply), and $382. dollars for the generic (Nitazoxanide). I just can't afford it, with all the other Lyme-treatment expenses, supplements, and herbs. I noticed that a forum member mentioned, a while ago, about using the "AllDayChemist" online Indian pharmacy. I looked up the generic on their website, and the monthly cost for the generic Alinia is $22.!!! The generic that I just paid $382. dollars for, at CVS. Gotta love this screwed-up American "healthcare" industry! And the generic that I just got screwed over, at CVS, is manufactured by a Pharmaceutical company in India. ANYONE have experience with sending a prescription to "All Day Chemist," in India? And if so. good results, or no?

I have used alldaychemist they are fine. If you do use it I would suggest not telling your doctor getting drugs online from foreign places generally is considered a no no in the medical field. You dont actually need a prescription just skip that part of the process when they ask for it. Its probably at least a month to get a order at alldaychemist.

They've tried, God knows, to find access for me for this incredibly expensive drug. When next January arrives (if I don't use the foreign pharmacies), in order to meet the Drug deductible I'll be paying "full price" for the Alinia generic--$2,200. dollars a month! (For 60 tablets.) Ive used AllDayChemist for years. As far as telling your doc - Ive always told them (Ive also not been keen on seeing dumb docs) and they’ve been fine with it or even suggested overseas pharmacies I didn’t know about.

Then again I tell them I do sterile compounding, IVs, and plenty of other treatments at home. If you have a decent doc they’ll take your resourcefulness as a sign they can hand you a little more charge of your own care imo

Blueridgedave - I’m in the Charlotte area and believe I have Lyme (img 23 band positive), but my pc and infectious disease Drs tell me I’m not positive by cdc standards. Can I email you to get the name of your llmd? I can’t seem to find anyone who understands lyme. Thanks.

Thanks Gracie. I agree, my Drs don’t know what they are doing, that’s why I need a llmd. I’m looking for any personal recommendations in North or South Carolina. I need help. I’m still reading through posts. Most of them seem to be older and I’m not sure if they are still accurate as far as recommendations. You might also want to try Kripps Pharmacy in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The head pharmacist there is a great guy, very helpful.

They used to have a way that, if you're from the U.S. they could duplicated your prescription for a Canadian pharmacy, and then send it to you in the US or Canada. Prices are more expensive than India, but I'd trust the safety of the product more. Indian pharma products are often contaminated or adulterated.
