Since Christmas night, I have been having memories of Christmases gone by. One of the most special Christmases was 1974, I believe. I don’t think I would have remembered it had it not been for pictures.
I was 4 years old. The most vivid memories I actually have were the miserable waiting for my dad to get the camera ready. I had to stand in the hallway and wait for what felt like an eternity. I also remember bright lights in the living room, I guess from the camera, and some of my dad’s family being there to see me find what Santa Claus had left me. I was so sleepy, and I was kind of bewildered by the whole thing.
My stocking was hung at my height on the edge of the doorway entrance into the living room. I remember always getting a candy cane filled with Hershey kisses, a Lifesaver storybook, an apple, an orange, and nuts.
I got a ton of presents that year. The ones I can remember were a bag of building blocks, Lincoln Logs, and a blue toy box. I got many other things for Christmas that I remember but not sure if it was that same year - a doll carriage, Baby Drowsy, a dining table and chairs, a tea set, a yellow wagon, a sewing machine, an organ, and more things in later years.
I remember loving my Lincoln Logs and playing with those a lot, especially on cold or rainy days.
I had a memory, too, of my aunt making a Christmas tree out of candy. It was a styrofoam base with candy attached by either straight pins or toothpicks, but I can’t remember what candy it was. She probably got the idea out of a Woman’s Day magazine. She always made cheese straws, too, which I liked. Except they were round and flattened with a fork instead of like straws.
