Canary’s post about DMSO got me chasing rabbit trails. I learned that MSM is related to DMSO and MSM eye drops can help floaters and cataracts.

Anyone have experience with MSM eye drops? What brands are good? Are they safe if you have possible optic nerve inflammation?

I have used MSM eye drops for my vision problems from tbd's, for years. I have/had severe optic nerve inflammation. It has gotten much better over time.

MSM does soothe the eyes, it does not make floaters go away.

Thx, carl! I was hoping you would see this. When I searched for related posts, I saw you had mentioned MSM drops before.

Do you believe the drops did anything other than provide a soothing feeling?

My mother has glaucoma and had a stint (?) put in one eye some years ago. That eye has never been right since and gives her a lot of discomfort. She says that eye looks and feels “sick.” The doctor keeps putting her back on Prednisone drops for that eye in addition to all the other drops she has to take. I would not think it wise to give her MSM drops without discussing with the doctor. Her pressure would have to be monitored before and after starting something like that and it would have to be determined if it has interactions with the other drops.

The doctor started doing scans on my optic nerve several years back. The second or third one was all good and improved from the one prior. That was after I had treated mold and Lyme and Bartonella with herbs. The last one was 2 years ago after moving into this remediated house that’s still moldy, and that scan showed problems again. I moved back into my car a year ago.

I need to schedule another exam. I am a year oversue. I try not to worry, but bad test results really sink me, emotionally. My eye pressure has been going up every year, and it’s been two years now since checked.

I wish I knew more about natural treatment and prevention of glaucoma. Ophthalmologists just make it sound like it’s inherited, permanent, and irreversible. I don’t believe that.

I just searched MSM drops and glaucoma and found this very disconcerting report of acute glaucoma caused by oral MSM supplement. It explains that sulfa drugs are known to potentially cause acute angle closure, and MSM is sulfur based. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24240884/

This also makes me wonder if MSM or DMSO are safe for me in any form. Both my mother and maternal grandmother had severe reactions to Bactrim (sulfa drug). Makes me believe we have some genetic issues with sulfur, but I never had the 23 and me done.

I read the paper, the good news was that the glaucoma resolved on discontinuation of the oral MSM.

I take a glucosamine/msm supplement daily, and have for years.

My eye pressure is normal, I get it checked regularly (4 times annually).

I know I have a sulfite sensitivity.

The 23 and me idea is something I need to pursue, I don't know where/how to contact a competent analyst of the results.

I know I am intolerant of many things commonly recommended in TBD treatment like quercitin and many botanicals.

Doc of detox "Bright Eyes" may be of interest to you. I don't know if it helps with glaucoma or eye pressure specifically, but its a fulvic-based eye drop that is said to detox the eyes from metals, mold etc. It completely cleared up my red eyes when I was living in mold. Now, I'm using it to see if it can improve my vision. I work all day on a computer and its been very helpful for dry eye and eye strain as well. If I were at risk for glaucoma or any degenerative eye condition, I would also consider extra inflammatory support, high antioxidants, brain and nerve herbals (gingko comes to mind for this) and especially increasing my retinol intake via liver or cod liver oil if tolerated (may be sensitive if histamines are problematic.)
