the research MR is refering to is by Zhang et al at Johns Hopkins who tested various drugs against "stationary growth phase" vs "logarithmic growth phase" cultures
he found significantly different responses to the different drugs between the two culture types
and this is suggestive of persister cells in bartonella in the "stationary phase cultures" - but not quite the same thing
"stationary phase cultures" basically means the same number of new cells are being produced as are dying off - and so the total number remains about the same

this typically happens as the culture starts to use up all its nutrients - or build up too many waste products

the world leading researcher on bartonella - Prof Ed Breitschwerdt - who is aware of Zhang's research - when asked directly - answered that the jury is still out on whether bartonella does in fact form persister cells .....
