Infrared sauna?

i have used infra red sauna

every one is different - and whilst i enjoyed it - it didn't do anything discernible for pain for me

i believe its mainly suggested for things like -
-detoxification - via sweating
-immune regulation - via red light effects on cells
-inducing autophagy - again via cellular effects of red light

all of these things can be generally helpful in chronic illness

the area is rampant with bogus marketing claims - with many many companies trying to find ways of one-upping their competitors to sell you $5k IR saunas (whenever you see that many companies vying for a market - you know there is high margin in it - the market is not yet mature - and many claims will be inflated)
the short story is - near infra red has the most convincing research behind it for these purposes
and this type if infra red is mainly produced by incandescent heat lamps.

the amazon sit in zip up things use heat mats - they make mainly far infra red

most cultures around the world use some form of heat therapy - sauna, Turkish baths, smoke lodges, hot springs etc etc and there are many beneficial effects

one easy way to see if heat is going to help you with pain without shelling out for a sauna is to try warm / hot baths - these actually help me more than sauna - and help many people with pain / joint stiffness etc

if you decide IR sauna is the way for you to go - i made my own with the same lamps as a very high end ones (the important bit) so Near Infra Red - for under $200 - warms up in 10 minutes - plenty of room to sit in and read a book - not hard to do - i managed it in a couple of afternoons even in my fatigued state

other potential options

if its localised pain
- TENS devices - i know couples who used them during pregnancy for severe back pain with helpful results
- possibly topical healing compounds - one member here has had very good results with Topical Solomon seal liniment or tincture - they could take a while to work on something very inflamed - but they work by reducing inflammation and promoting healing

again depends how handy you are or what you prefer - but i built my own based on the $3000 usd one here endorsed by Chris Kresser - who usually does his research - and i was more convinced by the near infra red literature than the far infra red stuff

i used 5 bulbs in place of 4 because i felt the original design lacked coverage of the lower legs
i used an untreated wood frame - and untreated canvas cover
i fitted switches so you could have 2-3-4 or all 5 bulbs light - for adjustability
it worked very well - though not as pretty as the original
total cost around $200usd

by the way with incandescent type Infra Red bulbs you need not be concerned with EMC issues - they are simply not significant emitters - its more marketing spiel that manufacturers use to try to scare people - i hate that.
i fitted a wire mesh connected to ground over the bulbs in any case - mainly to stop anyone accidentally touching them (they get hot!) - as it took only another 20mins
