How to make your own Alka-Seltzer Gold.

I got this idea from a website that had a similar idea (but for a different alka seltzer version).

Basically what it said is that you are able to buy the ingredients separately, put it in a container, and shake them.

So let's do this:

1 tablet of Alka Seltzer Gold contains:

Citric Acid Monohydrate: 1000mg
Potassium Bicarbonate: 344mg
Sodium Bicarbonate: 1050mg

Step 1

The above ingredients are all available on Ebay.
Or any other place that you are able to get them is fine too.

Step 2

Do the math!
Let's multiply all our powder by let's say 50 to get a batch of 119.7 grams (doesn't have to be 50 but this is a decent size batch).

50 * 1000mg = 50 gram of Citric Acid Monohydrate.
50 * 344mg = 17.2 gram of Potassium Bicarbonate.
50 * 1050mg = 52.5 gram of Sodium Bicarbonate.

50 + 52.5 + 17.2 = 119.7 grams.

Step 3

Put in contain and shake container! Try to shake it a whole lot.
This is the only step I'm still trying to improve.
As I'm not completely certain that shaking will make them 100% homogeneous.
In any case, it is good enough for me.

Step 4

Now that we made the batch, what we want to do now is to scoop out the equivalent of 1 tablet of Alka Seltzer Gold. So you can weight out 2394mg, as this would be the amount that's is in an alka seltzer gold tablet. Now dissolve this powder in water and drink it!

That's it!

Thanks RainyCloud! Love the DIY method whenever feasible.

I was using Alka Seltzer Gold occasionally while on disulfiram. Seemed to help sometimes, sometimes not.

I just made my first batch using the recipe above.

1/4 tsp is pretty close to 2394mg, I weighed it out several times.

I used 2 x 1/4 tsp in a glass of water, it fizzed nicely, and I drank it down.

I feel pretty rough today, so my first try with "Alka Seltzer Gold" is hoped to provide some relief.

If you want another poor man's quick and dirty version of Alka Seltzer Gold here goes:

find some baking soda, Arm and Hammer is fine, or Clabbergirl, empty about 2 teaspoons into a glass

find a lemon, cut it in half, squeeze one half then maybe the other onto/into the glass holding the baking soda

watch it fizz, marvel at the chemistry, basically just citric acid and sodium bicarbonate

add about 3 ounces of water to the mixture and enjoy
