Well, using smart phones definitely throws our neck posture out the window. The human head is pretty heavy for a neck muscles to continue holding it from falling forward .
If I am “googling” on my phone now at home, I find it’s way easier to be horizontal on my L corner couch with my shoulders and neck up against the back rest cushion. That’s not the best position but im not using my neck muscles at all then so it actually feels pretty good. If that gets old I switch to my recliner which has a pretty good headrest. Anything is better than an ongoing vertical position where your neck muscles need to hold your head against gravity.
i agree an i wonder if there is something to do with posture adding to or triggering this
the odd thing though is that this muscle - (exactly the one in the video that Carl posted - the SCM = sternocleidomastoid muscle)
is the one that seems to be upset is involved in turning the head from side to side
and tilting it forward when both sides are contracted at the same time - so its the opposite one from the ones that support your head against its own weight when the head is tilted forward all the time - as you say as if reading a smartphone
but that is the kind of movement that seems to trigger it to hurt - so something counter-intuitive going on there
this morning i tried a head pad for 230 minutes and then the SCM self -acupressure type thing from the vid - and i do think it had given a bit of relief
the section of that muscle next to my ear where it anchors to the skull is where the actual pain and spasmed muscle tone is - the rest of the muscle down to the collarbone feels normal - but i did all the pressure points anyway and think it has helped
will repeat a few more times today and see how i get on
