This is an over-the-counter (OTC) medication that often helps me with many headaches, if I take it early enough:
https://www.goodyspowder.com/products/goodys%c2%ae-extra-strength-headache-powderI've had migraines for about
40 years and they improved somewhat after changing my diet about
25 years ago. I still get them, but not as often and not always with the most severe intensity. I also get non-migraine headaches, too. I differentiate them by whether or not my vision is affected. Migraines impact my vision. If left unchecked, a "regular" headache might progress into a migraine. Not always, though. It's hard to predict.
I've been prescribed an array of headache/migraine medications over the years, but none of them helped. I've also tried other OTC headache/migraine medicines and had no luck with them, either. I'm not sure what, if anything, is special about
Goody's Powder, but I keep a box of it at home and another box in my car.
Again, taking it early may be part of the key for me. However, I've also taken it after some headaches have intensified and I may have had to take a second dose later, but it has sometimes lessened or relieved a headache that was already underway. Not always, though. It's difficult to know what will happen.
My friend also gets headaches and her remedy is to take some Advil with a small can or bottle of regular Coca-Cola. That's the only time she drinks any sodas. The Advil on its own doesn't do anything for her, but, paired with the Coke, it often helps. Not always, but more often than not. For her, taking it early also seems to be key. We hypothesize that it's the caffeine in the Coke that's assisting. Goody's Powder also has caffeine.
Anyway, I don't want to oversell Goody's Powder, as it may or may not work. But, with a persistent headache, it may be worth trying. It's packaged in small paper sleeves and it's a bitter powder. I place it on the back of my tongue, take a drink of water, and wash it down. Then, I follow with another 10-12 oz (300-350 mL) of water.
Here are the ingredients of the regular Goody's Powder in the blue box (the one I take):
Active Ingredients (per powder)- Acetaminophen 260 mg
- Aspirin (NSAID)* 520 mg
- Caffeine 32.5 mg
*nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug
Each powder contains: Potassium 60 mg
Inactive Ingredients:- Lactose Monohydrate, Potassium Chloride
There's also a "Warnings" tab on the above website. If you're considering trying the product, please be sure to first read that warning, to ensure you have no contraindications.Lastly, when I've had a bad migraine that isn't helped by anything else, I've had to go to the Emergency Room (ER) of my nearest hospital and request an injection of a particular pain medication. I originally named it here, but after looking over the contraindications and adverse effects again, I decided against it. For me, it's truly for emergency use only. After reading about
it again, it makes me think I might use Goody's Powder more often as an early intervention, so a headache doesn't progress and require an ER visit.
I hope you find something that helps.
