Thyroid Sufferers - what do you think

i have seen this mentioned a few times now and keep meaning to post about it as i know there are a number of people here suffering with thyroid problems triggered by these infections

Dr Westin Childs - who i think is a pretty reliable source for generally sensible thyroid specific advice ( if you can forgive him for the usual peddling of his own brand supplements)

anyway - he has mentioned supplementing with T2 hormone - and believes it has benefits for thyroid Patients
the main benefits being - it binds with the T3 receptor - and is available without a prescription

from his news letter ( i will just post the entire thing - minus the plug for his own brand supplement)

thought it was worth some discussion

Let me fill you in on some information that most thyroid patients are completely unaware of:

There are more thyroid hormones than just T4 and T3.

T4 is the thyroid hormone found in the thyroid medication levothyroxine and T3 is the thyroid hormone found in the thyroid medication liothyronine (and Cytomel).

These are by far the most well-known thyroid hormones but there are others:

T2 and T1.

Both of these thyroid hormones were thought to be just breakdown products of the larger thyroid hormones, so not much thought was given to them... until now.

Recently (within the last 10 years), T2 has been the topic of a lot of research because it's been shown to have thyroid mimetic effects on the T3 thyroid hormone receptor.

T1 doesn't look like it has much biological activity, but the same can't be said for T2.

Right now, researchers are looking into using T2 as a potential treatment for obesity and for elevated cholesterol.

They wouldn't be doing this if they didn't think it had potential!

Based on available research, here's what we know about T2 thyroid hormone:
It plays an important role in regulating the metabolism
It activates enzymes in the liver important for detoxification
It activates brown tissue (thereby increasing metabolism)
It increases cellular ATP and energy production
It helps regulate cholesterol levels
It helps maintain muscle health
It assists in the regulation of blood sugar levels
These are powerful effects that just about every thyroid patient reading this right now could benefit from.

But should you take it?

Well, research into this thyroid hormone is still ongoing so if you don't like trying new things that we are still learning about then it's probably not for you.

But if you are someone who doesn't want to wait 10 years for the research to catch up, here are some reasons why I think most thyroid patients should consider using it:
T2 is naturally produced by the body when it is healthy. There's no reason to think T2 is harmful (as long as it's not used in high doses) because the body creates it naturally.
T2 enhances the effect of T4 and T3 thyroid hormones. Adding a little bit of T2 to your existing regimen of thyroid medication can enhance how well they work.
Studies indicate that doses lower than 300 mcg per day are safe.
T2 is already naturally found in small amounts in thyroid medications like Armour Thyroid and NP Thyroid. If T2 truly did cause a problem, we would have seen it by now since these medications have been around since the early 1900's.
One of the best things about T2 is that it's the only thyroid hormone available over the counter.

So unlike T4 and T3 which require a prescription, you can walk out and purchase T2 at any time.

In a semi recent conversation with a Lyme doc I told her I do much better on armour thyroid than on synthroid. She told me it's because armour thyroid (pig thyroid) has a lot more hormones rather than the synthetic ones in synthroid or cytomel.

Those are my only not particularly substantive thoughts

Thank you for posting Garzie. This is very intriguing information. I currently take and have for decades level thyroxine, and a supplement called.gaia Herbs Thyroid Support. To be honest, I have no idea whether or not this current supplement is helping. However, I am always willing to try a supplement which claims to help the liver detox and help increase energy levels. These are two conditions which I still probably need assistance with.

That might be worth something to try for those who are using synthetic T4 and T3.

As mentioned by another member armor, brand, pig, thyroid, or any brand desiccated pig thyroid through at matter, has T4, T3, T7, and T2, I think. There might even be another one. My point being it has all the thyroid hormones in it that a pig would have which is similar to us just different ratios. This is why so many people once they change over onto pig, thyroid feel much better regardless of the levels of the synthetic thyroid hormones, they tried in the past.

For some reason, the FDA and the American thyroid association do not want to believe my above statement as a fact. There are obviously thousands of people in the United States using pig thyroid, they use it because it works better for them.!

And in 2029 desiccated pig fed is no longer gonna be classified as a medication, it’s going to be classified as a biologic prescription In the US. The brands armor and NP thread apparently are in the application process right now. Hopefully this doesn’t make the stuff super expensive but it could. if that’s the case and I can’t afford it, and I can’t possibly feel normal on synthetic thyroid, Then I guess I will be partially “thyroid ill” for the rest of my life. UNLESS this over-the-counter T2 actually helps people. So this kind of gives the desiccated thyroid people hope for the future.

This pig thyroid reclassification information is scatter just a few places on the Internet with no details. I even emailed Dr. Childs and two of the online women “thyroid guru” DRs about finding more information before the 2029 deadline of when it happens.

To answer your question, Endos never automatically suggest NDT pig thyroid, you just about have to force them to write the script.

And these endos are in a major city, not small towns. This has kept me from where I wanted to live for the last 20 years. Im not driving 4 hrs to see a Dr. on repeat quarterly basis. When your thyroid goes nuts (and it will sometimes), you need blood labs "yesterday".

Best option is looking for a functional MD who takes insurance. Independent one dont take insurance. They do when they are part of a multiple Dr clinic. Ask around.

There is a functional MD website, but they only list those who pay to be listed.
