It is both. Antibiotics should lead to feeling better, but sometimes a person can feel worse before they feel better. But not everyone goes through the "feel worse" part. I've experienced both myself from antibiotics.

The first abx I was ever on for any length of time was Ceftin for a sinus infection. I kept feeling better and better the longer I was on it, never had any herxing. But I'm convinced it had some anti-Lyme (and possibly anti-coinfection) activity. So I disagree that a good abx must create a severe herx. If your body is able to detox effectively, there shouldn't be a huge herx, in my humble opinion...

I agree with Razzle. I have read that a herx is really the side effects of toxic overload. Each of us may respond differently because of our ablility, or lack of ability, to process out toxins. In my opinion, the ideal protocol would not cause herxing. AAhh, now if we could just figure that out, wouldn't it be grand! Best wishes to all. bablymers mom

Just a thought - but we all have different bateria loads and different body systems that are affected by the infection. You know - how much Lyme is there to kill and where is it. I don't see how there can be just one answer.
Just like - I don't have the muscle and joint pain symptoms, but do have malaise, fatigue and the cognitive problems. When I Herx - the malaise and psychiatric stuff get worse. There are probably people who have the joint pain get worse.
Maybe your first antibiotic wasn't effective enough? Maybe the new one is more effective and that's why you feel worse?
As others have said, we also vary at how well we can rid ourselves of the toxic overload that the Lyme die-off causes.
