Joint pains getting worse - can you herx on amoxicillin?

I was on bactrim for 1 month, horrible side effects (herx?).  New dr. took me off that, said there is no proof bactrim kills lyme (?).  He put me on 1000 mg. amoxicillin for 1 month.  My joints are kiling me.  I have had symptoms for 3 years but joints are getting worse instead of better the last 6 months (2 on antibiotics).  Anyone have a similar situation?  Can you herx on amoxicillin?  Could that be causing joints (and headaches) to be worse?  Thanks. confused

Hi springsjean.  Bactrim is prescribed for tick-borne diseases. 

I am sorry you are feeling worse.  Yes, you can herx on Amoxicillin; however, I believe the recommended minimum dose to treat Lyme is 3000 mg daily.  You need to make sure you are taking the proper amount.  I highly recommend reseraching this and/or asking others what dose they take.

Oops sorry. I take 6 500 mg. of amox so that is 3000 mg. Thank you. It sets my mind at ease, perhaps it really is working! Thanks again. This site is priceless after going nearly crazy for 3 years. I am determined to be back to my active, outdoorsy, walking, bikeriding self.

Yes, you can definately herx on amoxicillian. I was put on 1500mg a day for a bladder infection and had a really bad herx. This is how I found out that I indeed had Lyme Disease. EVERYTHING got worse for me especially my joint pain. I couldn't even get out of the bed. Old symptoms came back too like anxiety, floaters, etc. And I also had new symptoms. This lasted for about two weeks for me but I noticed that the pain was diminishing at the end of those two weeks. Of course, the pain is back now but I'm currently not on antibiotics yet. I'm detoxing my body and getting it ready for the antibiotics.
