Help! is this a herx or allergic reaction??

hey guys,

i havent been on here for a while because ive been feeling so ill.

i have a question for those of you who have been or are on iv rocephin.

i have been on rocephin for about 3 weeks now, 5 days on 2 days off. i just had two days off and gave myself my next injection about 7 hours ago. immediately when the medicine was going in i started feeling itchy all over. it's a very intense, internal itch. i tried taking benadryl (been on it all day actually) but it hasnt gone away. it is just such a horrible feeling. the weirdest part is the itching and pain i feel in my head and face.

does anyone have any ideas on whether im experiencing an allergic reaction to rocephin or just herxing?

I had the same thing happen with Vancomycin, and my doctor told me it was an allergic reaction. I agree with CajunGrl - I think you should call your doctor.

Lymelady, Since the benadryl is not helping I agree that you should discontinue and always call your doc if you experience symptoms like this. Please let us know the outcome.

I do want to let everyone know that severe internal itchiness can be a herx though. I was on orals for a few weeks when I suddenly developed severe, unbearable itchiness in my hands and feet and my lip also swelled up and blistered. There was no rash or redness visible and the itchiness did respond to zyrtec. The pa from docs office said there was no way of knowing if it was an allergic reaction or a herx and advised me to discontinue meds for a few days. I decided to only eliminate the last med I added to the protocol at the time (Mino) and it all cleared up within a few days. A few weeks later I added the Mino back in again and had absolutely no reaction at all. I have been on it since February and last night I started to feel the itchiness again but it quickly passed. Thank goodness. lol

There are just so many unknowns with LD and treatment and we are lucky to be able to learn from each other's experiences. Now if I could only remember what I've learned so far. LOL
