I had this for a few years before beginning treatment. The sensitivity gradually went away for the most part as treatment progressed. It was very, very bad as well as painful. The ringing has gotten 80% better. Now it comes and goes but not nearly as bad as it was. I also got clicking, swooshing, and vibrating sounds.
I used ear plugs almost daily to muffle the sounds. I still have to ask people to speak less loudly and have trouble in restaurants that have a lot of noise or loud music. I carry ear plugs in my purse and car. There is nothing you can do for the ringing except wait for treatment to make it less loud.
Besides Lyme and co-infections, the ringing can be a symptom of thyroid issues which can be caused by Lyme. Has he had his thyroid checked? Not just a simple thyroid panel but antibodies but free t3 and free t4.
